Part 6 Waiting for the boat

We land in Grand Cayman around 9:30. It's a small airport, the kind where you take the stairs off the plane on the tarmac and walk into the airport building. It's also dark and rainy. We go through customs, pick up our soggy luggage and head out to find a hotel. Hubs had been notified by the cruise ship of a hotel that they had made reservations for us. Also they would be picking up the hotel tab for us as a way to apologize.

We grab a cab to the hotel, where we get into our room.
I should add that there was another couple trying to catch the boat with us. They got an oceanview room while we didn't. Hubs and I went down to the front desk where the clerk said "They're on thier honeymoon!" Hubs and I looked at each other and said "us too!" So they moved us to a new room.

We did have a ball in Grand Cayman- tried a bunch of new foods, met up with an online friend that lives there and got a "local's tour". When the ship docked - everyone was getting off the boat while we were trying to get on the boat.

        Epilogue -

The cruise line really went above and beyond for us. We each received an $800 shipboard credit, and we headed right to the arcade. We ate a ton of food and we both had a lot of fun.

The only downsides were that I got terribly seasick and the only kind of dramamine they had on board was the kind that makes you sleepy. Plus one of the shipboard channels was showing ocean documentaries all day. So I pretty much ate, slept and watched TV.

Hubby and I both decided that if this was the worst that was going to happen to us, we had it made. And yes, our luggage was searched twice on our way home.

300 posts woot! Tonight we dine...actually in my dining room.

Next time I will recount the tale of the little toy shop of horrors.

These. I believe they were mentioned in Domicile of Despair.

and I'm guessing that even though you went through all this you two never once considered your honeymoon to be "ruined", amirite?
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

              No it was an adventure.

We learned a lot, and it wasn't so bad because we were together - fighting the good fight.

Hubs wants to plan another cruise. I am very reluctant about flying.

Remember you'd have your Hubs with you. Another option might be for the two of you to drive down to Galveston and catch a ship there.

Well, at least after all the insanity, it had a happy ending.

Tip from an old sailor. Try excedrin migraine pills.

I stopped getting seasick ** back in 1998 when my ship was rounding the cape of Africa. Seriously, ships are NOT suppose to rock front-to-back. Side-to-side is normal but not front-back. blah.

I stopped because I figured out that I really had a headache. Fixing the headache fixed the seasickness.

** one exception. Riding a very small boat on the waters in the harbor around Hong Kong back in 2007. The water was very choppy and i was stuck on that boat for about 6 hours

Dramamine couldn't have helped cos I was already sick and you have to take it 12 hours early. I did take one after I got off watch though cos I knew I'd be right back on it in 12 hours. The second time through I was fine though.

So remember... Dramamine only if you know ahead of time - 12 hours lead time. Or something for a headache if you need relief "right now".

Other tricks: Go outside and watch the horizon. Rest your eyes. Take a nap.

I'll second this one. Last time we were in Hawaii (two summers ago), we went on one of the Zodiac boat tours. The only time I really felt seasick was when I was trying to focus on something on the boat itself rather than outside the boat. Focusing on the surrounding scenery made everything better. Works for me in the car too, which is good because I get carsick something fierce if I spend too much time focusing on something inside (like reading, or maps, or fussing with snack packaging for my kids....).

Hubby and I are going on our first ever cruise this May, and we have booked to fly into the departure town the day before, just so we can try and avoid an epic tale such as this one!

We've already had one hiccup though.. the airline we initially booked our cheap tix through went bust a couple weeks later! Luckily we got our money back right away, and have rebooked with the Flying Kangaroo airline. Double the cost, (but still relatively cheap) and chances of them calling it quits are fairly slim, (we hope!)

I advised our travelling companions to do the same, and now we all have an extra night away to relax!
