Part 4 Musical Airplanes!
Because of the kerfluffle with the landing gear, we all missed the 1:15 flight to Memphis that ironically was the last flight to Memphis of the day. Now the other cruise people are becoming irate. Talking to them, we found out that they are on a 3 day cruise and thier boat has just left. The cruise line was refusing to reimburse them because of the airline's problems. At this point it's 1:30pm and Hubs and I haven't eaten all day. (Fun fact: I get very airsick for no reason, so I usually don't eat at all on a day I'm traveling) I'm starting to get cranky, so we head to the airport food court for a snack. The Airline has so nicely provided us with $10 in food vouchers. Hubs updates the cruise rep and calls the airline's customer service. He makes arrangements to catch a flight to St. Louis, then to Miami, then to Ft. Lauderdale airport - which is closer to the cruise ship port.
Luckily we make our flight to St. Louis. Because we changed destinations, we had our bags searched again. However, it was now 4:45. No way to catch the ship. Hubs calls crusie customer service again. They tell us if we can make it to Miami, they'll try to get us on a flight to catch up with the ship. We told them of course that would be wonderful and oh by the way - seriously look into removing airline's exclusive contract. Rep reluctently agrees with us.
We were on standby for the next Miami flight. We explained our dilemma to the booking agents in St. Louis. After another bag search, we made it to Miami at around 7pm. (seriously we haven't touched our own bags since 9am and they've been searched 3 times!)
Now I may be a country girl, but when I think of Miami, I see a busy city. Right? When we landed in Miami the airport was deserted. It was seriously creepy. We walked around for a while and talked to the reps from another airline. They said that if we really needed to talk to our airlines reps that another flight comes in at 11 pm and they have someone working in the lost bags office.
So it's our first night of our honeymoon and we're facing spending it on an airport bench.

Kanalah, I read your stories, and I just don't understand why you associate with your mother at all.
And I am so sorry you went through all this crap to try to take a relaxing break with your new hubby.Labor boards have info on local laws for free

I have an insane sense of loyalty.
My mom has let me down so many times I've lost count. But she wanted to abort me and didn't.
My hope is that somehow she'll come around. With my luck it will be a deathbed confession or none at all.
I love my mom, I really do. I just don't like her as a person much.

I gave up on my mom many years ago. And my birth father long before that.
I have an incredible sense of loyalty to people who don't screw me over. Screw me over and you're dead to me. This seems to surprise a lot of people.Labor boards have info on local laws for free

Following has zero to do with the thread...
Kanalah, Have I reminded you lately how awesome you are? I've been a bit neglectful of reminding people of that lately. You have an amazing talent, seem to have the patience of a saint, and .. I know there is a lot more, but my mind has been very scattered lately. *hugs*

Part 5 Miami!
Here we are in the Miami airport. We're actually in fairly good spirits...I'm away from home, but I have hubs so I'm happy. At this point we're thinking that things are getting sorted out and the rest of the honeymoon will be awesome.
We found out there's a hotel in the Miami airport. It's $115 a night, a tiny room and we were honestly surprised we didn't see roaches. They had a resturant of course, and it was obscenly expensive. We get our bags put away and food in our stomachs and watch a little tv and rest until 10:45.
We head out and wait outside the baggage office. Around 11:30 someone unlocks the door and we recount our tale. Sadly all she can offer us is $25 in vouchers and her apology. We call the cruise line and they let us know that the ship is stopping in the Bahamas tomorrow, and there's a second airline that has a flight out at 7:30am.
We set our alarm for 5:30 and tried to get some sleep.
6am, we're at the ticket counter for airline #2. We get our tickets, check our baggage and head to the gate. We're waiting at the gate when we find out that due to a storm in the Bahamas, our flight was cancelled. Back on the phone with the cruise rep. The ship's next stop was in Grand Cayman in 2 days, and we should be able to catch the ship there. We collect our luggage, which airline #2 had been so nice to search again for us, and look for a flight to Grand Cayman.
In comes airline #3. They have 2 flights to Grand Cayman. One at 1pm and the other at 7pm. We got on standby for the 1pm flight and waited. No dice. Got on standby for the 7pm flight. At first we were told that the 7pm flight was full, then another agent told us that we had been booked twice on the 7pm flight. One was us booking the flight and the other was the cruiseline who had booked us on the flight. We straightened things out, checked our bags (searched again!) and got on the 7pm flight to Grand Cayman.
Gotta finish dinner and feed the family, so next update after dinner.

I SO get that. I had a pretty screwed up childhood on several levels. I've had loads of people ask me why I still did things for my parents, why I still cared, why I still even let them into my life at all. And while I don't believe in "honor they parents" just because they were your parents (some are so toxic you have to cut all ties), in my case, I did still loved them, and there was enough good mixed with the bad to keep them in my life (with limits - I loved caller ID, and would not hessitate to not answer if I wasn't emotionally up to dealing with my Mom, and no way would either have moved in with me). But I did keep them in my life - for me, that was the right decission.Quoth Kanalah View PostI have an insane sense of loyalty.

As for "coming round" or even actually settling things - I sincerely hope you can. I always hoped to be able to talk to my mom about a lot of things she did in my childhood. A year or two after my Dad died, she spent a month with us, so I hoped to resove a few things. Didn't happen. Anything I brought up, she either didn't remember happening at all, or would go on about how she never meant any harm in anything she did, etc. I never did get either the apologies for certain things I'd love to have had, or even any insight into anything she'd ever done. (She died a few years later).
Ok, sorry for the hijacking, back to the story, popcorn ready, sorry you had to go thru all the airplane problems, but so good of you to share for our entertainment (something akin to watching a train derail
Madness takes it's toll....
Please have exact change ready.
