  • They run on steam

A little background. In the week I run my own business but at weekends I run a station on a heritage railway. I do not suffer fools.

Here are a few gems from the last couple of years.

Customer :- It's disgusting you are selling Thomas badges and flags and he is not running.

Me:- We have Mars Bars (A candy bar) but we don't have a space shuttle either.

She walked out whist her husband was laughing his head off.

Customer:- Moaning about something locally we have no control over... If you were my husband I would divorce you.

Me:- If you were my wife I would pay.

Steam locomotive at the platform Customer asked... "Is it steam today?" I looked at the locomovite and replied "Yes"

Customer at the end of a long day... "How long will the next train be?"

    Me:- "Six carriages Madam"

A train at each of the two platforms and a woman asked "Are you the railway?"

    Other one line gems.

Do you do free sample trips?
Is that a real steam engine?
Could you turn the smke off?
Can I catch a train on the days you don't run?

I will see if I can dig a few more out.

Well since the train wouldn't be running, he could probably catch it easily. It just wouldn't be going anywhere.

To catch a train, you have to sneak up on it quietly from from behind while it's resting and hope it doesn't see you.

Those trains are a tricky thing to catch!

My dad's been a train enthusiast since he was a kid and since he retired about five years ago he basically does the same job you do. I should ask him if he has any good stories.

I know he's done the Thomas run a couple of times, too.

Sure, if you can find someone to throw it to you.

                        Loved the Mars Bars bit!

This would be nice too. That's the only surviving locomotive--narrow gauge too--owned by the little Waynesburg & Washington RR, which ran in SW PA until passenger service ended in '29. Freight service, via rail truck lasted until '76, when the line was deeded to Conrail.

#4 no longer runs, and probably never will again. Several missing parts mean that it's only a static exhibit now. It's been cosmetically restored a few times since it last steamed in '81. Since then, a small diesel (which I've actually driven--it's like driving a big truck) has been rebuilt to handle 'switching' duties at the museum.
