Best point made at the end of the article. They can cut you off whenever they feel like it, there's not much you can do, and they don't need to warn you. They can just say "you're fired because some schmuck who might last a week is willing to work for less" and from that instant you no longer have a job. However if you need to quit, despite all these Joe Schmoe types that are willing to work for less, you need to give them two weeks' notice (give or take) before you can leave, or else it would be inconvenient for the higher-ups, like the stellar example of overpayment himself: $700,000 a year and gives himself a $700,000 bonus... And then complains that the company isn't making enough of a profit.
Loyalty does indeed get you a whole lot of nothing.

That's like what happened to my dad back in '87. He had a vending route that was a union job for Vernors and on one Friday at the end of the work day, he was simply given a pink letter telling him not to report to work on Monday because the plant was closing down for good. What's interesting is that my mother told me that my grandma predicted almost 50 years ago that this "economy" was slowly moving toward a "two-class" system: rich and poor. One group would have everything, the other one will slave away for nothing.
I'm glad I got out in 2000 when I got wind of the fact they were getting out of the appliance bussiness. I hope the whole chain goes up in flames....Burn Baby Burn.
It was really cool to se all the comments on the story coming down hard on CC. (except 1 I saw from a guy who'd get his ass kicked the 2nd he opened his mouth on page 8 almost at the bottom)
Did that guy seriously just say the only interaction he wants with the Circuit City employees is "hey boy carry that out to my car"?
First of all never call anyone "boy" ever, I don't care how old you are or how young they are. I don't mean like someone saying "that boy is mean" I mean referring to them as "boy" as though it were their name.
Secondly, unless you are unable to carry it out yourself the employee has better things to be doing than carrying out a box to some ungrateful bastard's car.
Thirdly, though he says he "does his own research" most people don't, and unless he's reading up very thoroughly on whatever it is he's buying, the employees that have worked in the field for 12 years or so WILL know more than him. And if he's done so much research already why for the love of God would he be going to Circuit City to buy stuff instead of WalMart where it would likely be much cheaper?
F*cktard.

Well, that has to be one of the great mismanagement decisions of all time.
It's actually very similar to what Home Base did to themselves. Remember Home Base? They don't exist anymore becuase they mis-managed themselves out of existance. While they were cutting employment in all sectors and closing store locations, they were also giving bonuses to all the top management (bonuses about equal to the annual salary, at that), and the management at headquarters in Irvine decided that that was also a great time to have his offices completely remodeled.
... and anybody buying tech that's done their research is going to be buying either online or from some place like Frys Electronics...

As I recall UPS was going down that same route with bad management that resulted in that ugly massive strike ten years ago. I'm surprised they got their shit together.
I like how one of the commenter's said we should all join a union...well that would be great except most companies will not hire union workers and can actually fire you if they find you involved in any union activity. so...yea...not happening.
What appalls me the most is that the CEO somehow thinks 11 an hour is too much money to be making. I am so angry I can't use any nice words, so I'll use none at all.
In the state of New Jersey I can (from experience) say that 13 an hour is barely enough to scrape a living....
I've only shopped there once before, and it's going to stay that way!
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK
That is why people are complaining that customer service is going down the tubes!!!! You cut the people that have been there, that know their products, that CARE if the place looses customer base!!!! And while I believe that being an executive does make one deserving of a higher salary, DO NOT sit there and whine about how your company is loosing money while you wipe your ass with a hundred dollar bill!
You know, if these asshats think $11 per hour is "too much", I'd like to see them live on that and help support a family for a month or a week. Hell, I'd like to see them try it for a DAY.

First, I'm pretty sure that firing part is highly illegal (at least it is where I live). But you have to admit, a strong union could have probably helped prevent this.
Personally, I think they should fire the CEO and hire him back at reduced pay (min wage sounds about right). I would say burn baby burn, but I know that it isn't going to affect the assclowns who made this decision. They'll just take their massive salaries and bonuses and either retire or move on to running another company into the ground, while there will just be more firings in store for everyone else.
Also what pisses me off is their stock went up because of this... seriously, what the hell? (insert barely coherent rant about capitalism here)
crappytire- not sure about the legality, but the companies I have worked for specifically mention in their employee handbooks that they will not tolerate union activity or any talk about unionizing.

I worked for Circuit Sh*tty from 2002-2004 and it was the absolute worst job I ever had. Oh it was great at first, but then the company decided to take away all holiday pay. Then they changed us from commission to hourly (at which point anyone who made more than $12 an hour was fired just like they're doing now). Then they decided that 30 hours could still be considered full time because supposedly, the scheduling system only allowed so many staffed hours in any given department and they couldn't work around it (yet amazingly, the kids they were hiring in for $7 an hour were getting all the hours they wanted). All departments were overstaffed, but rather than firing the people who didn't bother to show up half the time and didn't do anything at all when they did (the manager's drinking buddies she kept hiring) it was easier to just slash hours. The store I worked at closed down a year after I quit, and you can bet I was there to dance on its grave the night they closed the doors.
Alan McCullough (if the bastard hasn't gotten himself removed yet) is an inept moron who's only interest has always been and will always be taking care of the executives and ripping as much as they can out of the hands of the employees so he and the other fat pigs in charge can have conferences in Hawaii (they actually spent millions of dollars a few months before they changed us to hourly to send all store managers and higher to Las Vegas for a week to discuss how we were all about to get screwed and they were going to get more money). It's no coincidence that my store manager (may she roast on a flaming spike forever) bought a brand new BMW a month after we lost all our pay and benefits.
Maybe this makes me a bad person, maybe this is uncalled for, but I felt no sadness when the corporate jet crashed a couple years back and killed all the executives onboard. In fact, I was disappointed that McCullough wasn't on the jet with them that time.
