I was lucky enough to find copies of all 4 of "Doc" Smith's Skylark of Space series at a used bookstore. Along with Verne and Wells, one of the series that changed SF forever.
Lister: This is Crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat: You're right. We're Nuts! This is an insane conversation....
Lister: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

*makes note of other series mentioned for future reading*

Finally found the Captain Future series in e-book format. Fun reads, if you don't mind that fact that the hero is the Mary-Sue-est Mary Sue that ever Mary Sue'd.
      Random Doctor Who quote:
"I'm sorry about your coccyx, too, Miss Grant."

I has a gallery: deviantART gallery.
I also has a "funny" blog: Aqu Improves Her Craft

I'll see your Mary Sue and raise you Doc Savage. Not terrible books (if you've got nothing else to read, they're ok) but ye gods it's a wish fulfillment character if ever I saw one.

My best recommendation for sci fi though is H Beam Piper, not the most well-known of authors but he was a master at it. Good characters (and the women were even characters on their own, rather than just fluff) and intelligent settings.
