I heard about this on the radio this morning. She died a year later; I think once the infection spread. What sucks is that he's also saying his wife didn't think to double bag it either. It's an unfortunate series of events, that's for sure.
It is sucky bagging cans with a bag of rice, but...why didn't they get the cut looked at right away, or when they realized it was infected (what kind of shoes was she wearing that a standard tin can 'cut' her foot)?
I know my store has been pushing for baggers to put as much in a bag/use as few bags as possible...

I'm a jerk. I didn't hear anything about the story then this post. All I could think was if more people used those mesh bags they sell for a buck, not only would this be a more environmentally friendly world, but less people would die from these kind of plastic bag mishaps.
The cut got infected and "despite multiple rounds of antibiotics and two surgical procedures," the infection spread and she died in the hospital, the suit said.
Sounds like she had the misfortune to either have something particularly vicious living on her skin or there was something rather virulent somehow on the can.
I did think of the ick-on-the-can angle (or something that was on her skin and got into the wound), but again...unless tests could prove it, how is WM fully at fault?
If anything, I blame the cashier for stuffing too much into the bag. Maybe the customer for not realizing the bag was too full; but then again, I've had customers who will cram 3 bags' worth of items into one and then act shocked when it breaks in the parking lot.
