I posted this on Fratching, whenever it's accessible again (BTW, I'm getting a 404 from your link).

This whole zero tolerance thing ticks me off. Kids have tantrums, so it goes. Of course a little kid is going to be freaked if they see the cops coming at them.

    Sheesh.

Anyone remember the video of the little girl of about 6 who destroyed her classroom and the principal's office? I think a couple of people got hurt. They wound up calling the police on her as well and she deserved it.

I'd rather they call the police than my kid get hurt by some little brat throwing a fit.

People get the idea that because children are little and cute they can't do much damage. That is not the case at all. I've had my eye blacked and my nose bloodied by children smaller/younger than 6. Ever have a 2 year old whack you upside the head with a toy firetruck? It leaves a mark- believe me.
Not to mention that they are just as capable of property damage as anyone else.

Teachers aren't allowed to touch students so unless the child responds to, "Stop that!" there isn't much else they can do without fear of a lawsuit. If the parent is unavailable or whatnot- what other option do they have when a child is utterly out of control than call the police?

The article is too vague for me to make a decision on this particular incident though.

instead of just arresting the six year old I would arrest the parents who allowed this behavior to continue or not getting this girl some help

The land of lawsuits, the girl has a fight, school calls cops, cops follow the law, parents sue the police department. I wonder if the girl beat up someone and the cops arrested her if they would still sue the police department.

You got that right! As a teacher I have my own rules about touching: I don't initiate hugs and I won't even initiate touching unless it's to get a kid out of danger or break up a fight. I've heard educators say you shouldn't even touch a kid breaking up a fight for your own safety and theirs, but I'm not gonna let it go and then have someone get tore up and then have the parents come after me and say I didnt do enough to break it up. Besides, if a blow connects with me in the process I just look at it as that a blow to the face will heal, a blow to a teacher's career won't.

I am going to hope and pray that this case sticks to the matter at hand, and does not turn into a racial thing......

that kid looks like a demon child in the picture...

I dunno. I think NightAngel said it best. Teachers are really put between a rock and a hard place nowadays when it comes to disciplining children. I'd rather if the teacher had no control over the situation that he/she call the police rather than allowing the other children, staff, or their respective careers suffer. I bet if you saw one of your friends carted away in cuffs when they were misbehaving that you'd never step out of line yourself!
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK
