  • Stupid, stupid, STUPID parents...

    http://www.jacksonville.com/apnews/s...8OSG0281.shtml

Okay, on the main board there was some discussion about the world (actually, just the US) blaming childhood obesity on TV, on fast food, on everything but themselves for allowing their kids to overeat in the first place. Today I found this story, and it shows just how far people are going now to make kids "healthy." Attention parents: babies need milk. Moms, that's what your boobs are actually meant for. If you don't have the time/stamina, there's no shame in using formula. I was formula-fed, and turned out just fine and my mother was by no means a bad mom. Giving SOY MILK to a baby, now that's being a bad parent. Yes, the parents were vegans, which itself is not bad or wrong, if it suits your lifestyle, more power to you (not trying to start a fight about carnivores vs herbivores). And Soy is fine. If you want to give it to your baby, they make a flipping SOY FORMULA!

Hang on, hang on. Vegan is all good and well, and rather healthy too if you do it right, but not when you're a baby. When you're a baby, you need all the nutrients you can grab! Be it breast milk or formula. Apple juice and soymilk WILL NOT CUT IT! I dont even have kids and I know that!

I don't understand. Were these people total recluses? How did NO ONE notice that this child was only 3 1/2 lbs? How did the parents not know there was something wrong with the child until "minutes before it died"? I don't see how anyone could not know. IMHO this wasn't an accident, it was wanton disregard for that child's life and health, and it was intentional.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

I'm just posting here to say I can't post here.

        I just can't.

Maybe later. When all the moderator-inciting, fratching-appropriate, insulting, profane, eff-word-spewing outrage leaves out of me.

        If it ever does.

I know the feeling. I'm surprised I managed to eke out some civility in my initial post. I wanted to mention various things, but I like this site too much to be banned, so I zipped it. *sigh*

WTF? I know there are soy formulas. I have heard of several kids allergic to milk who have had them since about 2 weeks old. So it would have been possible to raise that poor baby vegan without STARVING it to death because of ignorance and stupidity.

Check this out. This is far from an isolated incident.

The article mentions Buckhead as well as Miami and New York.

A google search on vegan parents +baby death will pull up a number of cases.

Searching +"vegan parents" +"baby death" will bring up results, but it won't tell you anything about how it compares to other parents. There are always going to be people who are too clueless to care for a goldfish, but who then breed and end up killing their babies through sheer ignorance. And there will always be people who think their lifestyle is the best but who won't bother to listen to experts or evidence that say otherwise.

Didn't those idjits ever take the kid in for Well-Baby visits? What about pre and post-natal care? OMG what in the hell were they thinking? Did they think that breast feeding wasn't vegan? They deserve what they got but the baby deserved better parents. I hope all the other vegans are getting out the word that babies need formulas or breast milk and that a vegan diet kills infants.

When I was born my brother decided to be allergic to all his foods. I know he really didn't decide but it turns out he was allergic to cow's milk and my parents had to put him on soy formula. Try finding soy formula in 1965. Now if my padres could find soy formula in 1965 those vegan parents can certainly find it in 2006-2007.

Both of my girls were on soy formula. They are both lactose intollarent and I could not even breast feed them with out them being sick.

Well, sure. I mean no harm against vegans, that's not the point. I'm outraged by any parent of any race, creed, color, or religion who does something stupid that kills a child. Stupidity doesn't discriminate. There are lots of people out there who shouldn't breed, but there's no stopping them.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products.
I'm sure there are plenty of vegan parents, probably some in their own social circle, who have successfully raised children without starving them to death. Why the heck didn't these morons ask someone?! Surely one of their vegan friends would've found them some soy formula.

Whether malicious or stupid, this is just plain criminal, and I hope they're put away for a very long time. And that's the most polite thing I can think of to say.

Holy crap. Even pre-mature babies weigh more than that. They had no idea indeed. I'm with the prosecutor, they are baby killers. And about freaking irresponsible parents received justice. Life sentences for the both of them.

They didn't want to take the baby to the hospital because they were afraid of "germs".
Gee....ever try calling the advice nurse, or going to a nutrition class? Like..maybe before you had the child?
And apple juice before 6 months? Yum, nothing like a bunch of acid to not only screw up their little baby teeth but to provide pretty much empty calories and not enough nutrition.

Color me weird, but I'd like to know what I'm doing before I'm dealing with a live creature depending on me.

That's not "weird", that's basic common sense. It would behoove most mothers-to-be to take a childraising class, learn about proper nutrition, etc. Talk to other parents, especially those from the same culture or creed as you, for baby-rearing ideas. If only the parents in the OP had done so, their baby would have survived and thrived.
