I'm sure that if he'd been on any of the Amtrak trains shortly after startup ('71) he'd be going out of his mind. At that time, the agency selected roughly 300 locomotives and about a thousand cars from various other railroads. Practically nothing matched--equipment was being constantly shuffled around to meet demand. You'd see beat-up black Penn Central E units pulling brown Illinois Central cars, or even yellow Union Pacific E's with silver or green PC cars, etc. Eventually though, most of that stuff got repainted into Amtrak colors, or replaced with better equipment.

I think it's a case of he was hoping to get money. Simple as that.
You're right LL - the train schedules here are apparently out of whack. I say apparently coz I never take the trains!
