  • Depressing...

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/LIVING/wayof....ap/index.html

I find this indescribably depressing. 1 out of 4 adults hasn't read single book in the last year???

I know not everyone enjoys reading, and that is fine. To each his own. But 1 out of 4??

I'd skew the poll results, I work in a bookstore and am a writer and I read on average 40-50 books a year!

Apparently all of those "1's" hang out around here. We seem to be a pretty well-read bunch.

And yes, that is insanely depressing. Most of the half-wits I know at least pick up one book Oprah recommended, or succumbed to Harry Potter mania and read at least the first two.

And I'm with you, AnaKhouri, I read about a bajillion books a year, just for my own entertainment and education.

Doesn't reading a lot online count for something? LOL

I am the 1 in 4 (or 5, in my case), in my family.

My mom never read for recreation when I was growing up. Ever. About a year ago or so she discovered Nora Roberts, and now she reads all the time. Granted, it's all "romantic fiction" like Danielle Steel, etc., but at least she's reading.

Neither of my brothers reads for recreation (one is a high school drop out, the other I remember once reading some books based on a video game years ago. Well, he reads manga...I just don't think he reads anything without pictures.)

I don't think my dad has picked up a book in 25 years.

I read like it's going out of style. If I've got enough to hold me over, I can go about a book a week, sometimes faster, depending on the book. I dunno, I'd feel so...sheltered, if I didn't read. It's so enjoyable to read a good book, I can't imagine not doing it.

          I don't understand that.
I mean, there is nothing, NOTHING, more relaxing than doing the following:

Run a bubblebath. Add all sorts of exotic smelling things.
Light a lot of candles (but for the love of Gord be sensible!)
          Face mask
          Hair mask
Maybe a glass of wine, but I prefer a bottle of cold water
          A good book

          Soak for half an hour.

There is nothing more relaxing...an added plus is, curling your exotically scented, squeaky-clean and glowing self up on a couch and finishing said book.

TTO calls the above a "Bubble bath...of DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM"

So... roughly 25% of the adult population doesn't read. But, someone who hasn't read a book in a year may have been reading about 15 newspapers a day.

Reading is good for you, but so is running. How many people actually run?

I went to the library at 9:30. It is now 11:30 and I have already finished one of my books.

Yeah, I have to say I get some reading done...
