This is a story from the zoo I used to work at. These poor artic foxes in the story are ancient, partly blind, and about the size of a small dog. Of course they're going to defend themselves if some kid gets in their space.
If you'd keep an eye on your kid and teach him that in the fox pen is not somewhere he belongs, maybe this could have been avoided. (Note: Their exhibit is built in such a way that the kid would have had to work to get his hand near them.)

On the bright side, the parents agreed to have the kid get the rabies shots, so the foxes did not have to be put down and necropsied.
