  • If you swear in Saint Louis... you'll get a fine!

    http://media.www.ecollegetimes.com/m...-3149901.shtml

You can also do a google search for it. I... I hope to gawd its false.

Basically the city wants to make it so you'll get a fine if you swear, or do dirty dancing in bars.

It won't last long. Laws like these never do.

      Public Order Act (UK Based)

Makes it an offense to cause alarm, distress or harassment, this includes the use of swear words in public, it normally results in an £80 fixed penalty notice, however it can only be brought into effect if a constable has warned you to cease your language.

      Its been around a while.

Free speech has been replace with people who feel that if THEY are offended by others that they are entitled to compensation ... we see stories of those people here daily.

            False advertising! Sexual harrassment! Racism!

All abused to death and ruined for those who are actually victims.

Whoops, people've wandered into Fratching territory. Clean it up or we're closing the doors on this one.

Meh, I wouldn't be too worried. Most likely, it won't be enforcable and will go down in history under "stupid laws".

Laws like this (where a power of arrest is attached, not sure if thats the case here or not) can be very useful, for example
                  a) Domestic abuse, male swearing at partner but because she is frightened won't make a complaint, however arresting male under sec 5 POA can remove *some* of the fear
                  b) Football hooligans who are too keyed up and looking for a fight, again can arrest, which prevents a clash
                  c) Drunken revellers who will not disperse and are being abusive, normally the threat of arrest is sufficient to make them do so but the power is there to enforce it.

A fair few S5. POA offences are dealt with by the means of an PND (Penalty Notice for Disorder) it can make the difference between a rough night out for all or one offender getting a nasty fine.

I've seen the signs in Virginia Beach, too. At first, I thought they were just for the Lynnhaven Mall (since that's basically the extent of VB that I've seen) but learned eventually that they applied citywide.
