    Northern Illinois University (NIU) Shooting

    There was a shooting at the DeKalb campus of NIU this afternoon. Apparently the gunman ended up shooting himself, and at least 18 people were wounded. They've had live feeds of helicopter footage on the ABC and NBC websites, with commentary from students, as well.

    I know we have a few members on the board here who live in that area/work or go to school there/have friends and/or family there, so I thought I'd post.

    I have a few friends and a cousin at school there. I've gotten in touch with everyone and they're ok, which is reassuring to hear, but it's still terribly sad. My cousin was incredibly shaken up and upset - from her text message, I think one of her friends was injured, though I don't know how badly. I was just grateful that she responded.

    My prayers and thoughts are with everyone who was injured, as well as their families. As my grandma said when I called to let her know my cousin was safe, "it's sad that there are so many unhappy people in the world, and that they feel the need to take that out on others."

    Thanks for Your concern myswtghst. I was fortunate that my class was in Still Gym at the time of the shooting.

    You never think it can happen where you live, then it does. I swear it seems as if NIU is becoming the shit hits fan capitol.

    I pray no other victims die.

      I've known people who went to NIU. A guy from my high school who now plays in the NFL went there (Doug Free)

      It's always sad and shocking when this kind of thing happens, especially since it's something I didn't even think about when I was in high school or college.

        The Latest Update

        They're now saying 6 dead, including the gunman, and another 16 injured.

        I'm waiting for more updates from my cousin - she was attempting to get to the hospital to see her friend (who I believe was not seriously injured, as my cousin saw her before she was taken to the hospital) or just to get home.

          An older cousin of mine went there, back in the 1980s/90s. I once worked concessions for their football games as well.

          What a shithead (the shooter, that is). Fucking cowardly to hurt and kill a bunch of innocent people and then take the easy way out. Maybe it's just me, but I'm wondering if the scumbag was one of them that decided to get all pissy because his girlfriend broke up with him...

          And Christ, but the media hounding the authorities shortly after the shooting (I caught a 6 o'clock breaking bulletin) is FUCKING STUPID! The one officer giving the briefing kept having to tell these jackasses "no we don't have any further information, we need to do our investigation" over and over.

            At least the media has has had the good judgment not to call this "another Valentine's Day Massacre."

            I sincerely do not know why that popped into my head, but I thought that would be something a TV network would say or a newspaper would print to juice up the tragic story.

              It really is scary how there is no way to prevent these sorts of things. I only have one big lecture, and it's kind of shaped like an amphitheater. My mom is still nervous from the Virginia Tech shootings.

              My school is in a nice little suburban town. You wouldn't expect too much. Well, every weekend, be it Thursday night, Friday night, or Saturday night, some drunk person walking alone gets mugged. We've had people getting mugged by up to six people at once. Lately we've had a purse snatcher. We've also lately had an ass-grabber who just sneaks up on women and grabs their asses. Some girl got raped in one of the dorms last weekend. She met some guy online and decided to invite him to her dorm room instead of somewhere public.

                Yeah, apparently we've been getting calls about this. Parents wanting to know if our school is safe and if we have a plan in place just incase. Doesn't help that this guy started out at a school in the same town as us.

                I don't know how people can do stuff like this, but yeah, the media doesn't help.

                    Police Chief at NIU's press confrence is on right now. Kind of scary knowing that he was actually currently enrolled where I live. Not sure why he chose NIU. Course if someone was dumb enough to try that where I work, he'd probably get stopped by all the gang bangers that go here before the police even got to him which is strangely reasuring for this. Not so much when it's my officers going up against the gang bangers.

                    I hope this stops. There's really been too much already.

                      Not too far away from home for me. A lot of kids from my high school go there. The guy who died in the famous Seton Hall fire lived down the street from me. At least this time no one else got hurt besides the guy with the gun.
