  • Most horrific thing I've seen in watching sports....

So, out of boredom I'm watching Arsenal play Birmingham this morning. About two minutes in I see a slide tackle that just looked mistimed but then I see the resulting injury. Disturbing and just one of the most horrible things I've seen in the time I've been watching and playing sports. I'm at a loss for words but it was just disturbing.

I am posting a link because I know people will be curious but I will say this: DO NOT CLICK IF YOU HAVE A WEAK CONSTITUTION! It's quite disturbing.

    YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

That looks sore. Very sore indeed.

    Thats basically the reason that
    a) you don't slide with two feet
    b) you NEVER make contact.

The most horrific thing I saw was the Clint Malarchuk incident on the following night's local news. When I heard that Richard Zednik recently had a similar thing happen to him, I could only cringe as I thought back to the original incident. Coincidentally, both incidents occurred in Buffalo.

(The Wikipedia link I gave has no pictures, but the description of said injury may squick you out.)

That's one of the worst I've seen - Closest thing I can compare it to was when Shawn Livingston of the L.A. Clippers (NBA) blew his knee out over a year ago.

But, yes, Zednik's neck being cut by the skate was the worst I've seen.

omg i had that happen to me in high school >< almost exact same way only mine was in softball. I was pitching a game and catcher missed a pitch, runner on third ran for home, I ran to cover the plate and runner slid right into my left ankle.
          >< only injury i've ever had <in an illustrious career of injuries> that has given me freakin' nightmares
I managed thru adrenaline, shock and high pain tolerance to sort of play (ever see a one legged pitcher?=p ) the last inning, but then my ankle wouldnt support any weight at all. Long story short I avoided treating it, just made do with letting it get good enough to sort of put pressure on it until finally three weeks later I put my foot down and next thing i know my ankle snapped. Like completely sideways side-of-my-foot-touching-my-outer-calf sideways. Couple tendons tore off the bone rather dramatically >< I repeat, worse injury i've ever experienced. It's been years and the sensation of the tendons snapping off the bone still wakes me in the middle of the night. there was a very audible poping sound too.
I hope that guy is still able to play after this 8/

Well, he won't just have bone damage (it was an open compound fracture to both bones) he will, like yourself, have the tendon and muscle damage. With the amount of fine motor control required in football with your feet I'd be suprised if he even makes it into a Sunday League.

Article about just this on SI.com

The article above lists some of the things mentioned in this thread, and has links to youtube videos of many of them. Not for the squeamish.

Found this while looking for my own "worst thing I've seen" - Tyrell Dortch from MSU shattering his leg while beating UW a few years back. They just kept playing the video over and over and over again.

myswtghst, I read that article and noticed that John Terry (Chelsea legend) getting kicked in the chin last year was on there. Funny thing about that was he was back in the stadium celebrating the win with his teammates. He's the definition of hard man if I ever saw one. Could be suffering a broken arm, leg, nose, wrist, can't see out of one eye, and is bleeding AND he's STILL insist on playing. He tried to play on a broken foot a while back. Definition of a lion heart.

Tim Krumrie of the Bengals breaking his ankle in the Super Bowl was another "OMGHOLYCRAP*BARF*" moment.

Willis McGahee's knee exploding in the National Championship was horrific too. I see him play for the Ravens now and I can't even figure how he can walk normally.

                      Richard Zednik injury

If you're squimish, watch out about 28 seconds in--the clip shows the trail of blood going from where Zednik was cut to the Florida bench.

Not a bad injury but the tackle was vicious enough to get the guy injured. Roy Keane, what a nutcase he was. http://youtube.com/watch?v=vF0xeo5uZmw

CISSE was unlucky, he healed nicely then had his other leg broken!

Our chap from the OP will apparently be playing again in nine months!?! I'll believe it when I see it.

Larsson suffered an injury similar to that and he managed to keep playing. Even went on to play for Barcelona. Also, Totti and Ronaldo (Not that whiny dude who gets stopped by Ashley Cole) have managed to come back from such injuries.

The interesting thing about the Eduardo incident is that I've been hearing Arse fans complaining about bad tackles when they've forgotten about Vieira, Keown, Lauren, Eboue, and Toure.
