RIP Gary Gygax

The web page is all in black. Fitting tribute to Mr. Gygax. I've played Version 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5. I never got to meet him, but my husband played a mod where he ran at GenCon almost 10 years ago. I know he'll be sorely missed by Gamers the world over.

For those of you not role playing gamers, EEG was the man who created Dungeons & Dragons (along with Dave Arnson).

When you take a moment to think about it, if there was no D&D, there would be no World of Warcraft, Everquest, or even Zork (oops I think I dated myself there). How many movies, TV shows and books were influenced a little or a lot by D&D?

I know there are lots of geek and nerd jokes when D&D is mentioned (See the FARK page), but for many kids, D&D helped them get over shyness, socialize more and dare to be a hero. And as people remember Gary, I am amazed how he always seemed to stop an talk to every fanboy and girl, often even invite them to a game at a convention.

I think Erik Mona's blog says it best;

"When a friend passes away, it is easy to be sad, to think about what might have been had he lived another year, another ten years. But my friends, I am here to tell you that Gary Gygax knew what a difference he had made in all of our lives, and he was proud to have made it.

Not bad for a life's work.

I'll miss you, Gary Gygax. We all will. Goodbye, my friend.

Yeah, he has had a hell of an impact on our nerd community here. Why, just look at the sheer number of comics and tributes to the man. They can express better exactly what I cannot.

I haven't played in..oh - decades now, but I still think it's a bit sad (bit, because that is a part of living - and he seems to have lived it well! And, wasn't that what the game was about - learning to live life like it's a game??)

Oh yeah - and it's the 'geeks' of the world who employed their imaginations playing those RPG games, who then went onto scientific communities to then invent the things we thought impossible (I wonder if Einstein would have played had the timing been different??)

I just realized something. Something that I personally find ridiculous: As for the 20+ nerd/geek sites I frequent every day, more of them mentioned "Talk like a pirate" day then mentioned Gary Gygax's death.
Damn internet needs to get it's head on straight.
