I'm not entirely sure that's a real puppy. The puppy apparently stayed in the curled position throughout the flight...from experience, I can tell you that most animals flying through the air (not from being thrown but from accidents and the like) go spread-eagled or otherwise flail around. Plus the video jumps a bit oddly at the point just before the throw, when the puppy has disappeared off the screen.

If it's a prank of some sort, I don't know what the point is, but this doesn't ring true to me.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's fake or real. Someone could have faked it as a joke or to try to discredit the military, or it could be real because every organisation has a few idiots.

It doesn't move at all. I would think any animal being held by the scruff of it's neck would squirm or do something. I believe, in looking at this, that 1.) it's stuffed and the "sound effects" were added later 2.) the poor thing was already dead, they found it and made a video - a very poorly thought-out video meant to be a prank, but it has backfired heavily as the Marine is now getting death threats.

Edit: I watched this full length version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUHvrT8bubc and I am 99% certain the poor thing was already dead. It was probably a dead stray they found. One of the soldiers makes yelping noises, or it was added later. Regardless if it was already dead, was still very stupid of them to make this video as how it is being misconstrued.

I saw that video, and promptly burst into tears. If someone can do that to a "dead" puppy, there's nothing stopping them from doing it to a live animal.
In my experience, tho, if an animal has been held by the scruff of it's neck long enough (a minute or so) it stops squirming. Plus, it was a stray, so it might not have had the energy to move too much.
Still. They're horrible people, what they did was horrible, even if it was a cadaver; because they recorded this event and made it available for posting on the internet, thereby traumatising many people.
I would rather watch 2girls1cup on a loop before I watch that video again.
