  • Massive geography FAIL

Some of us have encountered people who flunked basic geography - like a recent poster who had a woman say Ohio and Iowa were the same thing.

In that vein, here's the absolute worst example of geo-stupidity I have ever seen or heard. Read and laugh.

Well, ummm, uhhh, the reason people think New Mexico is not a state is...well....a lot of Americans don't have maps, and I think it's important that, ehhh, our education here, in the America should help Americans, and New Mexico, and it's very important so that we can build up...our...future....

I'd dismiss the story as a urban legend but I've heard tales of New Mexico natives being told they "speak good english" and other such stories of dumbshittery.

Bonus: the license plates there say "New Mexico USA" for that very reason.

New Mexico Magazine has a regular column called "One Of Our Fifty Is Missing" replete with tales of such (they need to collect it in book form, I know I'd buy one).

My dad has stories of trying to order stuff over the phone, then being told "we don't ship to Mexico" (the zip code wasn't a hint that it's the US?)

Flying out of Logan Airport one year, I had my NM state ID at the pre-security checkpoint. The agent thought I was from Mexico and there was something about my ID did not look like a Mexican ID (the zip code and state seal wasn't a clue?). Luckily I had my US passport on my person as well, although it took a few rounds of very badly-accented and broken Spanish on my part (she wouldn't even believe my mom who was standing right there) before she figured it out....okay how does an obviously Eastern Bloc last name and appearance translate to Mexican?

Secretary, raising her voice a little: Have you never even heard of the state of New Mexico? It's one of the big, square ones? It's right between Texas and Arizona? It's one of the 50 United States?
Supervisor: I'm sorry, it's just our policy not to ship out of the US.
Secretary: Tim, let me get this straight. Your company is going to lose a $14,000 order because the people in your customer service department are too moronic to know or comprehend that the state of New Mexico is a part of the United States?
Supervisor: Yes, ma'am. That's our policy.
It's your policy not to listen to the customer? Not to comprehend basic US geography? To be a raging dumbass?!

Sheesh, I wonder if these morons think New York and New Jersey are part of England...!

There was a quiz on Facebook "Name that state" or something, and there was like 10 states you had to point out on a map of the US. I was one of the only people who got all 10 right.

And it was obviously made easy because it sectioned off different areas of the US. Let's say the answer was Minnesota. It would have only showed Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and the Dakotas. Pathetic!!
