  • Chrono Trigger for the DS! Whoot!

Square Enix have announced that they'll be remaking Chrono Trigger for the Nintendo DS, and that it'll come out in North America for the Holidays

    http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/s...s,454846.shtml

The things that caught my eye the most, though:

    "
    • Taking advantage of the Nintendo DS hardware, CHRONO TRIGGER makes its way onto the portable platform with all-new dual screen presentation and Touch-Screen functionality
    • A brand new dungeon and a Wireless Play mode adds exciting new dimensions to this timeless classic
    "

    Whee!

    NEW DUNGEON??

Oh I swear to God, if they put Singing Mountain in this and I can't see it without buying a DS, I will be SO PISSED...

*...huddles over her ROM and Final Kicks the shit out of Magus...*
"Maybe the problem just went away...maybe it was the magical sniper fairy that comes and gives silenced hollow point rounds to people who don't eat their vegetables."

About damn timed too. *snuggles with Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Frog, Ayla, Magus*

I was all excited about this..... until I read this article. The fact that it is a straight port (with touchscreen controls and a new dungeon) is more than a little disappointing. With SquareEnix going remake happy with the already-released-revamped the previously unreleased outside of Japan Final Fantasy 3, the upcoming FFIV in full 3D with cutscenes and voice acting, and the oft-delayed Dragon Quest IV 3D remake, it's pretty damn lame, nay, inexcusable to just hash out (another) Chrono Trigger port. Given the anime cutscenes in the Playstation version, they could have made it a lovingly crafted, beautifully animated remake. Not that the original graphics were bad, but come on. It could have been rebuilt from the ground up, only fully hand-drawn animation instead of 3D like most remakes are going. Throw in some quality voice acting and replace the old digital music with orchestral renditions, and it's every fangirl's (and fanboy's) dream come true.

        This is just lazy.

I'm actually the most excited that they're keeping the old graphics and whatnot. Personally, I fell in love with the game not only because of the story and gameplay, but also the graphics and the music. And for a lot of the games I've seen for the DS that uses it, 3D doesn't always work that well, in my opinion. But I do hope it'll be the Playstation version they make the port from, as I'd still love to have the cutscenes.

What I'm the most worried about is that the new dungeon doesn't live up to the rest of the game. That would just be disappointing

NO! Not remaking it. Do not mess with perfection.

The voices. Ug. Crono would end of with the most voice acting and Magus will sound like a old lady who's high. Marle and Lucca? Vally girls. Frog like a stoner.

            Robo... likely like Hal.

I liked the graphics. It was perfect.

I'd like a more direct port from SNES. No lag during battles.

Maybe add the anime scenes from PS because they were pretty good.

Hell yeah. The SNES version with the PS cut scenes would be perfect.

I'm glad they're not remaking it, and I think that's also what makes the Virtual Console on the Wii so popular, since you can get to play all the old classics like they were. No need to pretty it up. CT is pretty much perfect as it is

                    The voices. Ug.
Let me clarify. Keep the original Japanese voices, add subtitles.

I have to agree with Kara. Not in that I would want full over voice acting or anything, but in that this is a pretty sad cash grab for Square with the most minimal effort possible.

It's a direct port. There's nothing new too it except one new dungeon ( Which is the token Squaresoft slaps on every "remake" that's really a port. ). I was hoping at the very least they would resample the music to a higher quality or remix it since they have tons of space on the DS cart. But no. It's basically just an SNES rom.

The music and what not sounds terrible since its pulling from the original SNES cart tracks.

Definitely. They should do something. New dungeons just don't cut it. Whoo-hoo, a new set of ultimate weapons/armour for everyone, and a new boss that is either nigh-impossible to kill or has a few crippling attacks and 4 billion HP.

There's no point in this. I mean, if it weren't for the fact that you command a team packing godlike strength by the end of the game already, sure, give us some new stuff to play with. This only tips the already-absurd balance of power in the game. As it is, it's possible to kill Lavos in a matter of minutes if you have the team of Lucca, Robo, and Magus + the Blue Rock and spam the hell out of Omega Flare.

Case in point, the GBA FFVI remake. Yes, I already bought the PS1 port but I bought it anyway, and I'd have bought it without the extra dungeon, because I'm a total FFVI whore. But it was like they decided, "Gee, you know what? Let's see just how much faster we can kill Kefka." It's so over-the-top in the GBA port that they could have at least added a turd dropping from the sky before Kefka descended, because he was about to get so royally PWND. Not that the Kaiser Dragon wasn't all badass and everything, but ultimately, what was the damn point?

Speaking of the PS1 port, am I the only one who thought it was more than a little shameful how much lag there was whenever a battle started in CT? Not that I didn't get all giddy when they got to the anime cutscenes, mind you.

Only reason I bought the game. Once I unlocked everything, I never played it again save to watch the scenes. Now with youtube, I doubt have too.

I still can't wait. After thinking, maybe a few extras wouldn't be bad.

Like Lavos getting stronger. New spells. New party member. (Schala!!!!)

Gawd. I remember the first time I went to the future. I was like Whoa man.
                            Then... the scene of Lavos.

Still sends shilvers. Zeromus was the first final baddie I fought. Lavos was the first baddie to scare me.

And the ending if you die. So sad.

Don't care! So far the only way I can play Chrono Trigger (and Chrono Cross) is through an emulator on the computer and I suck at using the keyboard! As for the handheld controllers? I can't find them! GAH!!!
