"It's a dog, okay? You can get another one. Relax."
What a fucktard. As soon as the sentence this thread is titled was out of that cops mouth I would have been doing many things to his face that are frowned upon here.
It reminds me of the cop who tried to pull my father over while my brother was lying bleeding in my yard two miles away after falling and hitting his head when I was a kid. I grabbed a vase and if it weren't for my mother grabbing me I was going to throw it at his head. I was around five at the time and really pissed that the cop was slamming my father against the hood of his police car while my brother was being loaded into my mom's car with blood running freely down the back of his head and my grandmother's shirt covered in it.
It saddens me greatly how uncouth and unfeeling that cop was. And it doesn't even look as though he is going to be disciplined.
However, if I were those pet owners, I would consider suing the cop for destruction of personal property, as his actions (20 minutes for a speeding ticket?? In what universe?) directly resulted in the death of the pup.
I wonder if the comment of "It's a dog, okay? You can get another one. Relax." would've been said had it of been a husband/wife? Some people love their animals just as much as a human (differently, but still).
Actually it's said in my town that vets are allowed to break the speed limit if they're on an emergency call. Our local vet once got out of a speeding ticket (going like 120 in a 30mph zone) because his stop was at his office -- the officer followed him, saw where he went and just waved and went on his way. Whether it's just a local thing or now... if a vet can speed to get to a emergency clinic, it would only make sense that people taking the animal would be granted a similar thing.
We had to rush one of our dogs to the vet a few weeks ago - if a cop got behind us we would not have stopped. I would have called the police to explain the situation and told them we can take care of it all when we got to the hospital and the dog checked in.
"Officer Stephens can be heard telling Gonzalez, "I really don't care about your dog, okay, because at the rate you were driving, you were putting every other driver on this road in danger.""
I sympathise with having an extremely sick pet, I really do, but that isn't a licence to do 100 miles an hour on a public road. I'm sorry, but he really was putting every other person out there in danger, and would have continued to do so had he been allowed to get back in his vehicle and "race" to the vets.
While it was handled entirely without tact, the actual outcome, and the statement above, I agree with. The guy was not fit to get back in the car and keep driving that way.
I realise my opinion isn't going to be popular, so let's keep the responses civil, and let's keep it about speeding, not "OMG - sick dog - you're so MEAN to PUPPIES!"
(20 minutes for a speeding ticket?? In what universe?)
The police usually do their darndest to make a stop for speeding take as long as possible. It's another form of deterrance. If you get caught, you're not loosing just money, but all the time you were trying to save, and then some.
This story was discussed the other day on another forum I'm on. Why doesn't this story mention that the cop is now getting death threats like the other one does?
I do not agree with the cops but how people are responding is beyond disgusting. And this is coming from a person who would rather pick animals over humans most days. The guy was a jerk, he doesn't deserve the assholery he's getting though. People should be mature enough to project their intense disgust with out threatening someone's life.
ETA not you guys...the people from the other story. Sorry about that.
my personal feeling is the cop did wrong, like i dont think he should be petroling for a while wrong, because not caring about a living creature even a dog, is wrong.
What he should have done is followed the guy to the vet.
i would not be surprised if they do sue that cop and the department. I can see a huge law suit coming from this.

The link JackSparrow gave above, I watched, and then read through the first page of comments, and about half were grossly disturbing death threats against both the cop and other commentors.
I'm in agreement with OneFang.
I understand and sympathize with the pet owner, and realize the officer was tactless and rude, but the person was speeding and putting others on the road at risk.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.
If my dog were that sick I'd phone the after-hours vet and alert them I'm coming, then race her down there. Maybe a touch over the speed limit, yes. But 100mph is just ludicrous.
I'm siding with Ree and One-Fang here. maybe it's just cuz I work with cops, but 100 mph is rediculous on the road. He was putting every other driver at risk, and at that speed, any crash would be fatal to more than the dog.
Although he handled the situation with less tact, the cop was in every right to stop them for that long. Routine speeding tickets can take anywhere between 5-30 minutes. Also, with the driver's emotional state, I understand why the cop asked if he was on anything. Illicit drug users will show highly emotional states, along with the normal "high" effects.
I know I'm not the most popular, but I'm just glad the only death was a dog, and not another driver.
Also, I wonder what would happen if he DID hit another car... would we be condemning him for driving that fast, or condemning the cop for not stopping him in time?
