OK, so Yahoo! has a great article on their home page right now on tipping etiquette (well great except for them saying not to tip the front desk person )
I hate to say it, but I disagree with about 90% of the article.
A tip (to me) is for good service and going above and beyond - not just doing the job that one was hired for.
For example, if a hotel only has valet parking that I already pay for, the odds of a tip are pretty slim unless I get my car quick. An exception was when my knee was screwed and I had a week at a hotel that offered free valet parking for people with a handicap permit. I made sure to give a 5 every time I needed my car.
Other exceptions are when I become a regular at a place and just have to say "The Usual" for whatever it is. Last place that was like that, my usual was about $3.25 and I'd leave $1.75. Last day I was there, I left a $10 - because they went above and beyond.
If I get good service at a sit-down restaurant, I give 25%. Delivery is a variable between 10% and 30% depending on the time - up to 50% if the weather is bad and I have nothing in the fridge. Beat the 45 minute estimate by 15 minutes, you get 30%. Hit it bang on, 20%. 10 minutes late, 10%. +10, it's going to be a round-up unless the weather is bad.

I never knew how happy paint could make people until I started selling it.
I do have to call you on that one... any employee in any position mentioned in that article are paid less because they are expected to earn tips (our shuttle drivers are paid between $1-$2 an hour less because people are expected to tip for help with luggage)
If you wish to find meaning, listen to the music not the song
I'll also call on blaming the driver for late deliveries. Yeah, cos it's his fault the kitchen staff couldn't make it time cos they were flat out tonight or some other SC took up time in the shop and they couldn't make your pizza on time.
It isn't always the driver's fault if it's late. What do you think, they're sitting around going "I know, I'll piss this guy off and give him cold pizza just for fun!"?
I haven't read the article, but I think Bandit needs a refresher on tipping etiquette.
OK...tipping is always a hot issue here, and members, it seems cannot discuss it rationally without attacking or getting digs in at other members, despite knowing the rules and threat of infractions and moderation.
I think, to avoid more of the same, this one is closed.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.
