  • The Reason Why Men Cheat is Discovered!!!

And it's totally not our fault!

Very poor headline and reporting by ABC.

Because the results were collected for a different study the team couldn't quiz the men on whether they were faithful, says Wallum.
So in fact there is no data on whether or not this gene affects ability to remain faithful. Maybe it's more like a "jerk gene" or maybe it relates to ability to adjust to the transition between passionate love and companionate love, which tends to occur around 5 years into a relationship, though rekindlings of passionate love (oxycontin bursts) still occur even in very long-term relationships.

Another example of the mainstream media trying to find a sensational angle to get more play out of a story about a study that draws no firm conclusions and is merely an intial examination of a possibility. No "monogamy gene" was found, because no data on monogamy were collected, making ABC's chosen headline misleading.

(However, I do think that some people are born with the ability to maintain monogamy in the long term and other's aren't-- I'm in the latter category and would love to see a study that actually DOES collect that data and compare the gene profiles of people in happy non-monogamous relationships to those in happy monogamous relationships)

They really did find a correlation between the number of copies of the gene and guys who cheat, but you can find a correlation for the most ridiculous stuff.

My genetics teacher brought it up in class and I found it funny, so I decided to share with you all.

So when are they going to locate the "stupid" gene and figure out how to block it?

On a similar note, I am looking forward to the day when scientists find and eliminate the protein compounds that block common sense.
Oh, how I will relish the day when "common sense" becomes a commonly shared attribute of the human race again.

Hey, if they did find a monogamy gene, maybe they could make polygamy vaccines!
