  • Great I feel awful now

A woman from where my WM was located, (Pennsville, NJ) was sentenced to five years in jail for abusing her daughter physically and sexually. Now why should I feel bad? Well, I reported her to the cops when she punched her kid in the WM parking lot, <got her plate number>and my report was anonymous, and I was never called by DYFS or the state. Now I keep thing if I had pressed harder maybe I could have kept some things from happening to her daughter. But then again our DYFS system sucks, so I'm not sure if that would do anything. <sighs> sorry to be a downer all.

I understand why you feel guilty, but you did do a good thing by reporting it, many people would have just turned a blind eye and said "None of my business".

How were you to know that this woman would go on to do what she did to her daughter? Anyways, it takes more than one act for Child Services to remove a child from their home. And I would assume that the police would have reported this to Child Services anyways.

You did what was right in the situation, there really wasn't too much else you could do.

If you placed an anonymous tip, most law enforcement agencies are required not to try to contact you again, due to the fact that if you wanted to share more information about it, you would have given a name.

You did what you could. Personally, I would have gone out and got the kid, and called the cops to come pick up the mother right then, but that's probably just the way my mind works, considering I actually want to be a marine, and an inner-city cop.

      Yeah, I know, I'm crazy.

The most important thing is that it's been reported. There are thousands if not millions of cases of abuse that don't go reported.

Shards, I think you would make an adorable police officer.

They already knew and she had a history. You reported and did your part which is more than some people would do.

You should not feel guilty. Your call may or may not have led to her arrest, and if it did, then you did a good thing.

I'm sorry, but a parent who abuses their child deserves jail time, if not worse.

Cheers to you my friend. You DID DO a good thing.

You reported it. That's all that matters. Based on my experiences and studies of society, most people wouldn't do that. You did what's right and there was nothing else to do.

Booya! You reported! Hell, that might have been a ticket to her downfall and thus, Justice. How long ago did you report if ya don't mind me asking? Because did ya read that part?

That wasn't from our Crow - Pennsville Police Lt. Bruce Maahs said her arrests both in July 2008 and in 2007 were credited to her family breaking their silence.

You did the right thing and to the extent that you should have done it. You reported it, they investigated it. You (good) deed is done.

Like others I understand how you feel guilty.

However, even if you'd given your name... it might not have stopped her before they arrested her.

One of my sister's best friends (a teacher at that time) saw a mother hitting her own son in the school parking lot. She looked up and saw the teacher and said, "If you call the cops, I'll just beat him harder when I get home."

You at least told the cops... but there's no guarantee she wouldn't have hurt her own daughter harder just to punish her for it.

And it sounds like you're thinking, "Maybe if i'd pushed harder, the girl wouldn't have been sexually abused... maybe the abuse would have stopped at just her being hit." but ... unless you know them personally, know what happened behind closed doors... it may have already been happinging.

but ... just think... the girl is away from her now... and you helped protect her
