  • Another way to fight shoplifting . . . Public Humiliation!

I had a feeling that folks around here would be interested in this :

"Shoplifter mugs posted in NYC Mall"

"Shoplift in this Mall . . . and you could have your face right here."

Those words will regularly appear on several electronic billboards located throughout the Staten Island Mall during the holiday season. They will be accompanied by the mugshots of people who have been convicted of shoplifting in the mall.

The Staten Island district attorney who came up with the idea stated, quite correctly, that shoplifting is not a "victimless crime."

When retailers lose money to theft, the results are higher prices, fewer employees, less and slower service . . . Retailers that lose too much money have to close down, and people lose their jobs . . . You all know the score here.

Personally, I think it's a great idea, and I would very much like to see it happen at other malls and retail stores as well.

To the Staten Island Mall and the Staten Island District Attorney's Office, I say . . .

“Excuse me. Is this bracelet real jade?”
“Ma’am, this is a thrift shop. The tag on the bracelet says $1.50. It comes with a matching mood ring. What do you think?”
    “I don’t know.”
    “Yes, it’s real.”

    "... the nameless faces..."

Come on. Like shoplifters get name suppression? Go ahead, if you're gonna go one step, go the whole hog, put their names there.

      How about pillories?

An electronic Wall of Shame for shoplifters is a great idea. Hopefully, it will get the message across.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I doubt this could happen in my city/state.

I have asked the police and DA about posting pics of people we catch and was told no it was illegal to do that.

I would love to have their pics up for all to see what scum they are.
