What the dingetydangety was that woman thinking?? She never heard of hot water bottles? Heck, you even get those nifty microwavable ones so there's no chance accidental burns from spilled hot water.

      Bloody moron

        She should be charged IMO:

Houston police said the mother turned on two stove burners and left the house for a short period of time.
Who does this? Turn on the stove then leave? Complete ignorance even beyond stupidity.

"She was trying to keep her babies warm," neighbor Chanel Yarborough said. "It be on all the time. They sleep with the stove on. That's why I don't understand what happened."
Apparently ignorant all the time - ever hear of a space heater or one of those heater fans? Even if you're poor you can pick some up for $30.

The mother was questioned and released without charges pending the outcome of the investigation.
        Um....

well i can't say i've never heard of turning on the stove to keep warm...
but... usually you use the stove itself, NOT the burners, and the adult stays in the kitchen.

heck, it's one of the benefits of baking too... get to turn the heat down for a little while...

but yeah you gotta use your brain if you're going to do that!

When I was younger (and extremely poor), My mother would boil big pots of water for heat. But she wouldnt just turn on the stove, with nothing on it and walk out of the house?!

Hard times are hard, that I understand...but what the hell was she thinking????!?!?

              Poor babies...

No offense intended to your mother, Amina, but isn't that an extremely wasteful way to attempt to heat the place? Small space heaters are pretty cheap, especially from a second-hand store, and if you're going to use the electricity to generate heat, it's got to be more economical to do it with something specifically designed to generate heat for warming the room, surely?

I would have thought you would pay more in the utility bill than it would cost to purchase and run a small space heater, over a winter, anyway.

Im not sure. You have to remember that this was years (20 maybe?) ago, and space heaters werent cheap as cheap as they are now. So no extra money coupled with the fact that they hated wasting electricity, so they'd waste gas.

And with 3 kids and 3 seperate rooms, theyre definately werent buying 3 seperate heateres.

Yes I know it may make no sense. But Im just saying I identify with the stove as a heat source.

I can tell you one thing though. It worked.

Oh sorry yeah, I guess if it's a different utility it's also more likely to be thought of differently. We only recently got gas cookers in this country, so I naturally assumed the electricity-powered hot disk things. They are not what I'd think would heat a room. A small gas flame, however, different story.

Still not a wise idea, but different story.
