This was in our local newspaper on Sunday.

Letter: Loss of mailed gift leaves Christmas lesson

On Monday, Dec. 22, the U.S. Postal Service delivered a Christmas package from my sister via airmail. I signed for the delivery and excitedly opened the package immediately to find - nothing! The package had been pilfered. There was no insurance on the package, and the post office in Laurel probably correctly denied liability.

So, now my sister is out $70.80 air postage plus the cost of the gift and me with an empty box and a moral for Christmas. Never sign for and accept delivery of any package, even from a trusted carrier, without first thoroughly examining the package and its contents.

And alls I can think is...wow... If they had bought the insurance they wouldn't be complaining.

Wait, you need insurance to protect you from the people you contracted to carry your package stealing it instead? I thought they called that "protection money." Insurance should cover accidents, not malicious intent. I hope the writer notified the postal athorities and the police.

Yes, thats what you need insurance for, sadly.

Somehow, I don't think they did. Cuz, yannow, that would require work

I've heard tales of less-than-honest Customs in some countries, especially Italy. The writer mentioned "airmail", so it could have been an international package (given the cost of the postage, I think so).

*sigh* You may be right. It just kinda startled me since most of my shipping/postal commerce is done with US companies, with the exception of Mongoose Publishing, which is the UK. More and more, paranoia seems like a good lifestyle choice.

In addition, US Customs are entitled to seize any illegal content Guy didn't mention whether there was a nice customs form informing him of seizure. My bet's on that one. People try sending each other the weirdest shit sometimes, figuring no one will ever know because it's by mail

I'm guessing either Porno (maybe not Child Porn given they were able to write the letter but maybe stuff like what Cartman's Mom was in) or maybe some Foodstuffs that requires extra-special procedures to import or are an Agricultural Hazard.

i would think it could be a matter taken to the police however? tampering with the mail is a federal offense ....

whatever the post office told her it doesn't mean she cant file a police report

something similar happened to a guy i know (the one difference being he'd received the package on a navy ship). the package contained the box to a new zune, only the zune was missing... i don't remember what happened to the postal clerk (though i'm sure he/she got in trouble for it) but the guy eventually got his zune back (tho for a while the master-at-arms held on to it as evidence)
