    you have no idea
I worked at a summer camp one year and a girl brought me her tooth brush to put the toothpaste on it

she had never had to put her toothpaste on her toothpaste before...

she had never made her bed
she had never brushed her own hair
she had never turned a shower on before

she was 10 years old and literally helpless, she went home a much more independant girl!

I pay for some one to wash my dog. Ok sure they give him a hair cut too but washing the children is hard enough.

Well hell I can understand that but just washing the dog.It takes me a little as 15 mins to wash and blowdry my pom-chi and pomerian doggies.

My whole point of this post is that this recession is really showing how stupid and wasteful people are. I dunno growing up I was expected to learn to cook, sew and clean. Its really sexist when you think of it. One person in the article said that they didn't even know how to sew on a button. one of my biggest gripes with the food network.Sometimes I feel like they talk like everyone is an idiot. My hubby always tells me that not everyone grew up with amzing cooks in the house like my mom and grandma,so everyone doesn't know how to cook. I guess I shouldn't be surprised I had to teach my best friend everything, from how to cook instant potatoes to how to sew on a button.

My friend S moved into the room I used to rent, where my best friend is the landlord, and he had to show her how to use the washer and dryer and explain how to measure soap, not to bleach colors, how to fold, etc.

S was 21 years old when she did her first load of laundry.

I'll admit...I'm 18 and still haven't done a full load yet but then again, I live at home.

The only exception to that is that my mother will load up everything, I might have to set the load off on occasion, but other than that, I'll help hang them out, bring them in and then I do my own ironing and folding.

I didn't do laundry til I went to college.....my mother is the way-overly motherly type, and didn't let us do much on our own. (there are reasons why, which I wont go in to here)

You know... all these things they say we should do during a recession... and a lot of what those people were posting... is stuff that my family has always done anyway.

Hell, something no one mentioned that I've started doing, is I cook all my meals for the week on my days off, and package them... this has a few benefits, first it guarantees I have portion control and don't overeat (I will eventually lose the weight damnit), second it saves time when I'm busy and will be less likely to eat out, and third, I actually do spend less on groceries because there is no way NOT to plan my grocery shopping when I do that.

Also I'm surprised no one mentioned (that I saw) stocking up on non perishables when they're on sale (oh hell, today I bought enough to survive the apocolypse progresso, $1 a can, no limit, hamburger helper, $1 a box, no limit, betty crocker potatoes $1 a box, no limits, knox instant rice, $.99 a package, no limit, rice a roni, $1 a box, no limit... THANK YOU REAMS )

I had to fight my mother so that I could do my own laundry. She'd keep sneaking into my room to snag up the laundry from the hamper I bought and throw it into the wash.

My parents used to leave just about every light on in their house, even when they went out. 10 yrs later, when I visit them, they go nuts now if I leave any lights on when I go to bed.

My dad has always cut his own grass but only because he loves doing it. There have been days where he has cut it twice, he likes it that much.

When I was in high school a friend told me that someone said that I was a rich snob because my mom has someone clean the house once a week. We werent very rich but when my mom went back to work she liked having someone clean for her. She still does but thats because she is a neat freak and a bit lazy nowadays heh.

My parents and sister where fortunate to have lots of money but after the recent stock market stuff my parents have lost a lot and are, for the first time in about 15 yrs, learning to be frugal spenders.
I feel bad in a way because my dad grew up dirt poor. 4 people living in a house the size of most peoples gararge and an outhouse. He worked damn hard to get what he has.

Me, I've always been broke so I dont outsource anything.

Wow... You guys make me wonder. Truely.

By the time I was 6 years old, I could put a six-course meal on the table. With damned near perfect timing (I was always a little late with the veggies).
I was doing my own laundry by the time I was 10.
Forteen rolled around and I could buy my own groceries with my Debit Card, which was mine to do with as I see fit and, No, Mommy and Dadddy didn't save my bum if I over drafted.
At Sixteen I was fixing the car and installing new light fixtures.

These tasks are nothing new. Just something Mom and Dad wanted to make sure I knew before going out into the big scary world by myself.

That list of things that people "cut back".... with the exception of "cutting hair", I pretty much would assume people did the other stuff on their own anyway (trimming dog/dog washing is a somewhat frequent thing though).

I knew how to cook when I was.... I have no idea actually. Basically as soon as I could sit up on my own, I was being taught how to clean/cook/do laundry/etc. Still needed help (was probably 4-6), but still -- the thought that someone couldn't is quite shocking to me. Although I sadly know a lot of people (men and women) who couldn't cook if their life depended on it - they live off of TV dinners.

I know how to do basic cleaning, laundry, folding, etc...Can't cook for the life of me. The realm domestic has always eluded me in terms of interest and necessity.

Mom stopped doing my laundry in high school to force me to start taking care of my clothes. It didn't quite work all that well for her....

You'd be surprised. My wife is trying to make enough dog training for her share of the bills etc.. (and extra, if possible). She right now has at least half a dozen dog groomers referring people to her for dog training, she's gotten quite a few referrals (and this is without any kind of referral fee / finders fee).

Excellent lesson, I bet that was one of the most valuable things she's ever learned in any camp!

My wife yells at me whenever I cook "too much" but then is quiet when I don't have to cook for the next few days. Even when we get Chinese food (delivered) I get a lot of extra so I'm not cooking for a while (sometimes as much as a week).

As for the sales - that's another thing my wife yells at me for. I stock up on non-perishables and cleaning supplies when they're on sale. We have roughly 40 pounds of kitty litter in the pet room, 20 cans of soup, and about 15 cans of veggies. They're all going to last years (and make great hurricane supplies).
Dried pasta, mac&cheese, cleaners, canned fruit, etc.. I always hit when they're on sale (and Publix has had some good BoGo deals the past few months (except this week - it sucks).

I learned how to wash and fold laundry when I was 10, during the summer my mom was visiting Berlin. When I was college freshman, one of my neighbors asked me if he had too many clothes in the dryer. It was completely full.

Uh, yeah, if you like your clothes to get DRY, it's a biiiit much.
