  • What say you, CSers?

Found this on another forum I frequent. So, would you give the exchange? Or say too bad, so sad, should've returned it sooner? (and did I ruin your christmas? Can I get just one last point? )

Yep, he should have exchanged it.

      Fry's sucks anyway.

I can understand how it could have happened. Bought and given away for Christmas, and then the next time you see the recipient (which could be months if they live away), they tell you it's the wrong thing.

If they found a discrepancy in their inventory, then they should just swap the discs right over. (No refund - far too long, and if legitimate, not the reason for return). If not, then he has no proof he didn't switch it himself, and shouldn't expect a thing after so long.

I'm very skeptical about the whole setup anyway. Why didn't the friend say anything earlier? Why didn't they attempt to do something themselves with the gift receipt? And why would they be looking for Mars Attacks if it was most likely to be in a Home Fries box?

Also, it's nice and convenient that the same thing should happen to a friend...

No smart guy... there are some obvious things that need clarification. Are you a claiming a brand new manufacturer sealed box contained a different movie disc inside of it or was it from something else.
What one of the other posters there said.. and ... I can believe it.
          Because it happened to me.

I bought a DVD for my dad for a WW2 movie and mailed it... granted I sent it a little late but when he got it, he was like, "Um... it's a CD of AOL?"

He sent it back to me and I got it exchanged. I was worried that the place wouldn't believe me but they didn't question me at all. maybe they'd had some issues or something.

            Someone over there said
Actually, I don't know of any store that will take back an opened CD, DVD or casette tape unless it's defective (Read: broken).

            From dictionary.com:
having a defect or flaw; faulty; imperfect

...I think that the case containing the wrong DVD counts as defective.

I do think there may be a case to be made on the store's part regarding the fact that it was purchased 2 months ago, however. That said, if I were the employee I would most likely give the benefit of the doubt and make the exchange. I have at least one DVD that I've had for over a year that I haven't opened yet.

There have been numerous instances in the (online) news of this kind of thing happening, so it doesn't surprise me. The story he tells is very possible, so I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and exchange it for another copy, but would not refund the money after all this time.

It's very easy to open a DVD case and replace it with something else and then re-shrink-wrap it, although I've never figured out why they bother to put something else in there. Very few stores weigh items (only those with self-checkouts as far as I know) so there doesn't seem to be any need...

If they actually had the Mars Attacks DVD in stock I'd gladly do the exchange, but if there was no refund offered I'm guessing it's because Fry's has a policy of exchanges for same title only on DVDs, CDs and the like, to prevent people from burning copies and getting the item for free.

And I wouldn't go against that. If a manager decided to in the name of customer service, I'd have him/her do it.

Shit happens. The friend should have opened up the DVD sooner, or mentioned the error sooner.

I stopped people giving people the benefit of the doubt when the phrase "I didn't realize I'd get fined if I was late in my returns to the library" became common place.

Seriously, just last week I had one guy say this and then launch into some sob story about his parents visiting him on campus so apperantly he couldn't take 10 minutes to return the book he borrowed.
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

The local stores around here are pretty good when it comes to problems like this.

In November I picked up a movie from out of town, and when I got home I opened it and found that it was empty (yes, it was in the factory original packaging). I phone them right away, explained it, they ordered me a new copy and in December I brought the empty case (with original packaging) back and they gave me my movie.

(Yes, I did open it while I was there...)

So now, I check DVDs and CDs.

Good thing, too... yesterday I bought a CD that had a crack in it, got it exchanged right away.
