According to the article, the bus driver was trying to be 'funny'. Unfortunately, he didn't seem to realize that the kids probably weren't able to completely separate fantasy from reality...

Also, what are those poor kids going to think when they see a character who is supposed to be a protector get beat up, by the school bus driver no less?

Um ... what's "funny" about that? I suppose if he'd said something like "Ha ha, you're just a dumb dog not a real crime fighter" it might have been "just a joke", but just out of the blue with no statement why ...?
