    Heartbreaking indeed. And apparently my heart is particularly hard.

        Poor child. She'll never catch up after that kind of neglect, but thank God she is in a safe place.

        I am sad also for the mother; she obviously had very little in the way of resources (financial, emotional or cognitive - the article says the mother's IQ was tested at 77, which is two standard deviations below average. Two SDs up puts you in genius range. Two down... not good). I wonder what will happen to the older boys - they are adults now, technically, but are they going to be able to manage independently? They won't have had much of a foundation from their mom.

        We need to be able to help people in our communities before things get to a crisis point.

        (Give me 4 years to get my Master's in Social Work; and one day I dream of fostering children as well).
