  • Dear Abby letter writer complaining about express lane hoggers

April 5, 2009 column - Last letter @ bottom - writer complaining about people using the express lanes with cartloads of groceries

I liked Dear Abby's advice about speaking to the manager about this. However, Dear Abby seems to think the cashiers are "unwilling" to confront the miscreants and therefore need more training. Can't be because the cashiers have either #1. Been told by Management to take these cartloads (and that's happened to me, I'm in a long line with my cart completely full and told to go to Express) or #2. The cashier did try to tell the person to go to another lane and they ignored them or threw a complete hissy fit.

    What do y'all think?

I've been directed to the lane before myself. The cashier didn't say anything but from the look on her face I could tell she was thinking it. So I explained that I was directed to the lane so she didn't think I was trying to be a bitch.

And yeah, sometimes the cashiers have said something, only to get yelled at ... by first the customer and then the manager so sometimes it just makes your day easier to not get yelled at.

I would get yelled at by the customer then the manager. However when I'm the FES in charge all big orders go to regular lanes. I never back down!

What's "more training" supposed to accomplish if the CSM's direct the cashiers to take the moron with a cart full of stuff in the express register? Happens all the time at Wally World.

Abby is part win, part fail - depends on the subject she's addressing. She fails on the assumption that the cashiers are at fault for the express lane overloads. (Yep, been there done that as a cashier myself)

If we carpetbomb her with e-mails that explain the situation from "the other side," do you think she'll admit her mistake or offer new advice?

no she will just put in one letter and claim that some people feel that way
while saying that many others agree with her
making it sound like only a handful of people disagreed with her opinion

                Only a handful do, probably.

could also be some of the cashiers feel they aren't paid enough to care.
