  • Ann Landers letter - Employees should wait for customers who can't make a decision

    http://www.creators.com/advice/annies-mailbox.html

    second letter.

At least the responder agreed the employee had a right to do other things if the customer wasn't ready to pick something.

I saw that this morning (I read that column every day). You know, if the customer is just looking, it's fine for the employees to say "let me know if you need any help" and go do what they need to do. She shouldn't have to babysit the customer, but she could have been more gracious about it.

I dislike customers that want me to babysit them through a sale. I have work to do every moment of the day.

I would tell them, "I'll be right over there and when you are ready, please tell me."

The employee shouldn't have told the customer about the work that she had to do...should have just told her where she was going to be when she was ready.

              Thanks. I see it now.

Yeah, that guy needs to get over himself. What a crybaby. Sheesh. I mean, yeah, she maybe could have been more tactful, but I have a feeling he was less than cordial from the get go.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just have a hunch he acted like a dick right out of the gate. I find the people who get the maddest at clerks and whatnot are people who are either looking for something to get mad at, or acting like a jerk from the start and don't like getting treated like they are a jerk.

What did he expect, that she'd escort him around the store like he was the King of Siam or something?

Probably. I hate customers like that; when I worked at the pet centre, there'd sometimes be customers like that who'd expect me to follow them all round the place while they picked out a pet for their kids. Um hello, I have work to do; I can't babysit you while you dawdle round the store all day.

I agree that perhaps the owner should not have given the customer the details of whatever else it was she had to do, but I certainly don't think she intended to be rude.

If you say you're not buying, as a salesperson, I'm going to tend to ignore you in favor of the people who are making a purchase.

I always make sure that if you have a question, I'm within reach, or hand out a business card...or whatever. But I'm not going to hold your hand, listen to you whine and moan and go back and forth, when someone else is standing there ready to add to my paycheck!

People seriously need to get over themselves.
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK
