  • 50 things everyone should know how to do

I can do the majority of stuff on that list.

I know how to do CPR, but I don't know the correct amount of compressions and such.
My cooking isn't the greatest but I know a few tricks.
        Can't drive manual transmission.
        Storytelling sucks.
        Can't remember names.
        Can't sew.
Detecting a lie depends on the person, but I can generally guess.
I know how to keep a clean house, I just choose not to sometimes

          I'm at around 41.
The ones I can't do/can't do that great:

          1, 7, 8, 14, 21, 26, 35 (don't need to do), 40, 46 (don't need to do)
Answers are easy...it is asking the right questions which is hard.

I can do 40 of the things on that list, give or take a couple, and could probably learn or BS my way through the rest.

Okay. I have to say, I've seen lists like this before and they're absolute bullshit.

Except this one wasn't! Yes, you may not need to know every single thing on this list, but by and large, most of the stuff on here is decent stuff to know.

Other lists I've seen had stuff like "know how to tie a tie," "choose wines," "gut a fish," and other things that only apply if you're living a very specific kind of life. Most of the stuff on here is pretty generalistic, and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed! *goes to learn a few of the things off the list*

But they're hardly things that everyone should know how to do, was my point. Few jobs require ties, and few occasions, as well. etc etc.

Yeah, there is that. I only know because (1) my high school had a tie as part of the uniform (most Australian schools make students wear uniforms), (2) I'm realted to a lot of wine buffs and picked up a few things along the way and (3) when I was a kid we used to go fishing every summer.

IMO cleaning a fish is basic survival skills. While the basics can cover many different types of fish, you can get better results if you know how to gut (and clean etc..) different types of fish.

Filleting a flounder is nothing like filleting a salmon. (Spent 3 years running a seafood deaprtment).

Also - how to grow basic food (vegetables, spices, etc..) should be on there.

I can probably do 30-35 of the list.

I can see you read the list, so you must have noticed it's not actually a "skills needed to survive" list?

                          er....41....
They didn't mention anything in there about how to hunt or build a shelter or build a trap...

hmm... I can do, at least to an extent, all of those...

I know a few languages somewhat (let's just say I don't want tested in it - it's been like 15 years )... and any flirting is done subconsciously by me (I've been told I flirt with many women, despite me not even being aware nor even being attracted to them -- and I wouldn't know if someone was flirting with me unless they pinned me against a wall and kissed me -- and I actually had a woman do that once because I wasn't getting her hints!).... CPR is rusty (like 20-25 years ago)... but... yeah...

Meh, I dunno. As a DINK yuppie, there are a few things on that list I'm perfectly happy paying somebody else to do. Yes it costs me money for something I technically *could* do myself, but I don't have the inclination to invest the time and dollars into learning how to do a good enough job. Eg painting a room - yes I can (have done) but I can see that a pro gets a much better finish. Unless I was planning to do up houses and resell them as a side hobby/income earner, it's not worth my learning how to do that properly to get one room in my house done. Better time/cost return to hire a professional.

Speak two languages? Why? While I personally do wish I could speak another language, I have no forseeable use for it. Part of the problem with learning one is finding a way to immerse in the other culture somehow. I'm not planning travel or moving to other parts of the world, and I don't know enough Germans or French people or whatever here to keep the practice up so I didn't lose the language if I did actually take classes.

Some of the handyman stuff is rubbish. Along the lines of the concept BJ was trying to get across about other lists with things like "gut a fish" on them. Change a tire? Yeah, sure (again, I actually can), that's what the AA* membership is for. Like painting a room - happens so infrequently that I have a better cost/return ratio to hire someone else to do it. I'm 36 now, and haven't ever had to change a tire - not once. And no, I don't mean I've had someone else do it - I've simply never ever had a flat. Something that happens that rarely in my life I don't need to know how to do.

But basically, overall, some good stuff in it. Definitely agree basic computer skills, and probably typing, is a bit of a must in this day and age. The first aid stuff - yes. Like the tyre thing, you'll probably never need it, but the consequences are so much more dire. I don't mind waiting around for the AA to show up if I have a flat, but if I can save someone's life by knowing CPR/Heimlich, then that's pretty significant.

I can also tie a tie. But I couldn't choose wine! I think I could probably do a basic job of gutting a fish, but it wouldn't end up as haute cuisine. Might look a bit hacked up, but you'd end up with the edible bits only.

                              * - I'm perfectly aware that's triple A in the States, and the AA is an entirely different concept. Here in NZ, the automotive people are the AA. So are the people you go to to stop drinking.
