  • Disney is going to buy Marvel for $4B

    Yes, that's a 4 with twelve 0's after it.

I wonder how much Stan Lee is going to walk away with?

I also wonder how this will affect franchises - like the Spiderman movies?

Yeah the internet has been going crazy all day with this news. A lot of people are angry, upset, sad, etc. I'm in the camp of sad. I don't have a good view of Disney after what they've done to so many of my favorite movies/tv shows like Doug or Power Rangers. I hope Disney just does it for the money and doesn't interfere with the creative process but I doubt it.

        the creative process
You mean Marvel's creative process of spinning off multiple realities and versions of their properties, and ignoring all continuity occasionally, and cranking out sequels to anything popular, or unpopular, if they think they can make a few extra bucks off it?

How's Disney supposed to change that? It's what Disney already does.

You've got a point but Disney could make it worse. Besides Marvel is not as bad with continuity as DC is.

Nah, not really, but I can't stand whiny-but Toby Maguire, "Being a superhero is sooooo harrrrrrrd". Dude, shut the hell up and save your girlfriend from random bad guys. It's what you're there for.

Actually the NY Times made an interesting point that Disney's most successful properties appeal to girls, and Marvel's to boys, so it should be interesting to see how this works out, especially ifn Disney is smart enough to leave Marvel to its own devices so they can continue to bring money in from a part of the market that Disney's been unsuccessful in.

The franchises - X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic 4, are already licenced to other companies. Fox owns the rights to X-Men, for example.

However, Marvel started to produce their own movies with Hulk and Iron Man. It is these Marvel produced movies, such as the future Iron Man 2, Thor, Avengers and Captain America that will essentially be Disney movies.

Isn't that the whole being-a-superhero-doesn't-solve-life's-problems schtick that Spiderman is supposed to embody?

In the Disney/Marvel stakes, Hannah Montana the movie did more business than X-Men Origins: Wolverine at our cinema.

My prediction: It's only a matter of time before we see a Disney animated adaptation of Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham!

you know what? i cant see this being really bad unless they start censoring the comics or special disneyfying the movies.

marvel would have disney money behind it, disneyland can have marvel based rides which can only be cool, and the special effect teams of disney which can be pretty awesome can work on marvel movies.

                    how is this bad?

Meh, it could be bad or it could be good, or nothing will really change. There's no telling at this point. I myself don't have faith in Disney to not mess things up, but you never know. Personally the Marvel fans across the internet are really overreacting. Some people are really pissed. Sure I don't have an optimistic view myself but at least I'm not going all "F*** Disney! Marvel sucks now! <insert incoherent rant here>"

I think we should wait and see what happens before we really judge this as a good/bad thing.

There have been a few reports that Disney isn't planning to make any changes to the Marvel properties. If they stick with that, I'll be happy.

That being said, I'd like to see the Rocketeer be absorbed into Marvel continuity (if Disney still owns the rights, that is).

I don't think too much bad will happen with the comics. But I am worried about the movies. They were just starting to get good.
