  • Doctor Who in 2010: New Producer, New Doctor, New Companion... NEW LOGO!

Just a little news item this morning for my fellow Doctor Who fans on the board...

As some of you are no doubt aware, in the spring of 2010, when the new season of Doctor Who debuts on the BBC, we will have a new Producer/Head Writer (Steven Moffat, taking over from Russell T. Davies), a new Doctor (Matt Smith, who has the unenviable task of taking over from David Tennant, the most popular Doctor since Tom Baker), and a new companion.

At 8 AM this morning Greenwich Mean Time, the BBC revealed that there will also be a NEW LOGO that will grace our screens during the opening credits of the show:

    I like it.

What say the rest of you?

EDIT: Oh yeah, just for fun... CLICK HERE for a look back at all the logos the series has had over the years. ^_^

I've never watched the show regularly, but if I remember rightly isn't there supposed to be a fixed limit of 15 or so doctors, and aren't they there yet? They seem to change about every other year now.
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

It was said at one time (I think during Tom Baker's lengthy tenure as The Doctor) that Time Lords can only regenerate 13 times. And Matt Smith is the 11th Doctor. So, you do the math.

BUT... this IS Doctor Who we're talking about, a show where The Doctor's arch-nemesis, The Master, long ago used up his 13th regeneration... and they keep coming up with ways to bring him back! The latest: During the Last Great Time War, the Time Lords resurrected The Master, giving him a new set of 13 regenerations in the process! He then promptly ran and hid, so that he was the only other Time Lord (after The Doctor himself) to survive the Time War!

In other words... I expect that 20 years from now, we'll be on Doctor # 16 or whatever, and it'll all make sense, somehow.

I can't watch the video as it isn't available in my area. Bleh.

Anyway, the logo is alright. For some reason I can't visualize the most recent one, so I can't compare them.

I think there is too much "new" happening

I don't like it...it looks so tacky. I don't know but my fuzzled mind says, "NO!"

I love the new Doctor, I love the new producer, I love the new theme (introduced last series, I think) but this new logo...no. No, I don't like it for some reason.

During the Colin Baker term (worst Dr. ever IMO) the last season was a 3 part story line called "Trial of a Time Lord". it turns out that the Time Lord "judge" was actually the Dr. (according the BBS site) between his 12th and 13th regeneration and he had turned "evil" and came back in time to "prosecute himself" and take control ove his remaining lives. I wonder how they will resolve that issue down the line.

acording to the BBC Dr. Who site Matt Smith is designated as Dr #11 (though I really do not consider the 1996 BBC/FOX Dr. Who "movie" with Paul McGann to be a real Dr. story so only 10 Dr's but that is just my opinion)

I'm a bit of a Doctor Who freak and I believe this story was resolved in a book, and I believe that the Doctor Who books are considered canon.

I for one love the new logo and can't wait for the new series next year. Doctor Who is starting to get really repetative, and I think a great big shake up is what it needs at the moment. I for one hope that the new producer will make the new series a little darker. It has been leaning far too heavily towards children at the moment.

And it's an incorrect opinion. Besides the fact that the 1996 TV movie featured the return of Sylvester McCoy as the 7th Doctor for his regeneration scene, which is in and of itself enough to make it canon, there's also the fact that the most recent Christmas special, "The Next Doctor", made it CRYSTAL CLEAR that McGann's Doctor is canon.

While some fans consider them canon, I, for one, do not. Mostly because I don't read them, but also because TV producers have always felt free to ignore the events of spin-off novels. It's true of Star Trek and most other SF TV series, and it's most likely true of Doctor Who as well. Most SF TV producers consider only the produced and aired episodes to be canon, and so I'm the same way.

The only Doctor Who books/short stories that I consider canon are the ones that have been reworked into TV episodes during Tennant's run as The Doctor. The 2-part story "Human Nature/Family of Blood" was originally a 7th Doctor "New Adventures" novel called Human Nature, and "Blink" was originally a short story that Steven Moffat wrote, which he then reworked into an actual episode. So, those 2 stories are now canon, because they were filmed and aired as part of the TV series.

Don't worry, Doctor Who is in fine hands. In case you don't recognize the name, Steven Moffat has been a writer on the series going all the way back to the 2005 season. His 6 episodes are considered by most fans to be the best episodes since the series' revival, and in some cases, they're considered to be some of the best Doctor Who stories of all time! Here's the ones Moffat wrote:
                  1. "The Empty Child"
                  2. "The Doctor Dances"
                  3. "The Girl in the Fireplace"
                  4. "Blink" (my personal pick for best Doctor Who story ever, and I STILL want Sally Sparrow to return as a proper companion! )
                  5. "Silence in the Library"
                  6. "Forest of the Dead"
So, as you can see, the show is in FINE hands. They couldn't have picked a better person to take over the reins from Russell T. Davies. In those 6 episodes, Moffat has shown that he really GETS Doctor Who and fully understands the show's potential better than any other modern DW writer. As long as Matt Smith's Doctor is likable, I think we're about to enter a NEW Golden Age of Doctor Who here.

Can I still complain about the logo? I don't like it the new look, what if they change the intro music too?

But yeah, I like Moffat and hope he doesn't get writer's diarrhea.

You can if you like. BTW, the Beeb has confirmed that during the opening credits, we'll only see the words DOCTOR WHO appear on-screen, in the new type font. The TARDIS-styled DW logo is a secondary logo designed for marketing purposes. I expect that next year, that DW branding will start showing up on all the licensed merchandise, such as the toys, spin-off novels, etc. I imagine it might also make an appearance on the covers of Doctor Who Magazine, as well.

While they might do a new arrangement/recording of the theme music, don't expect a new song. Doctor Who has had the same theme song for its entire 46-year history. Sure, new versions of the theme song have been recorded several times over the years, but the basic tune is unchanged. Changing it now would be sacrilege and the BBC would have a rather sizable worldwide MOB up in arms if they were foolish enough to do that!
But yeah, I like Moffat and hope he doesn't get writer's diarrhea.

In the extras for the series 1 DVD set they had an interview with the producers, musical director etc. They have as much flat out said they will never alter the opening theme other than to possibly spice it up, but they will not change it. They consider the DR Who Theme, like the TARDIS, as one of the things that defines the show.

If memory serves, when the theme tune creator, Delia Derbyshire, died it was said by the BBC that her final version would remain the definitive and only theme tune.

and as for the number of lives, in one episode (possibly the final Sylvester McCoy one) the Master attempted to reset his regenerations by sacrificing a human to the the Eye of Harmony. Or more accurately to the TARDIS carried mathematical model of the Eye which actually resides beneath Gallifrey.

Really? After the season 4 finale my sister and I agreed that the Doctor needed to be put on suicide watch since every season seems to be How Much Further Can The Doctor Be Pushed Until He Snaps.

Perhaps I'm missing something; I've only seen the new seasons and I saw those in one big lump over the summer.

Well his entire people are dead you know. Apparently they have to remind us at least once an episode lest we forget why he's all emo and you want to shake him until he gets over it and stops pushing his companions away so he can truly be alone and angst about how no one loves him. Seriously, could you make them last longer than an average 1.33 seasons? If he writes bad angsty teenage poetry on livejournal the BBC and I will have words.
