  • A return at Grumbels

    I know many of you are faithful readers of this strip, so you've probably already read this.

    Still I thought I'd share since that's a major WIN o the customer's part!

    Oh, yes, yes, yes . . . I saw that strip. I LOVED IT!!!

    My own mother - May she rest in peace - was once just like that woman's husband.

    For a really long time, she would act like she was entitled to get satisfactory gifts (for her birthday, Mother's Day, Christmas, and such) from her family . . . Often times, she never even bothered to say "Thank you." All she did was criticize, and sometimes seemed to expect us to justify to her why we got her a particular gift.

    One year, she finally pushed me too far, and I bluntly told her that I didn't appreciate her lack of gratitude and the general way she acted when we gave her gifts. It was what the rest of my family had, for a long time, wanted to say to her, but didn't.

    My mother was stunned at first, and then finally realized the way she had been acting, and apologized. After that, it was much better . . .

    She was still honest about the gifts she received. One year, for example, one of the gifts we gave her was a sweater and she explained to us that it wasn't really the style that she would wear.

    But she also made it clear that she appreciated the gifts we got for her, and never failed to thank us.

    <Sigh>

    Here's hoping that woman's husband learns a lesson from this as well.
    “Excuse me. Is this bracelet real jade?”
    “Ma’am, this is a thrift shop. The tag on the bracelet says $1.50. It comes with a matching mood ring. What do you think?”
    “I don’t know.”
    “Yes, it’s real.”
