  • 25 years ago today the first website went live.

You'd think it would be a technological company like Apple, Intel, Microsoft?

Nope. The internet started with a website for Symbolics.com

Registered March 15, 1985 and it's never been dropped (but I'm sure it has had several owners - the current owner is on a forum I help run).

Too bad the current site looks like shit. Nothing but ads and very little actual content, despite being called a blog.

If I had the money, I would buy it and set it up as a historical site. It would be more fitting.

      Negative on that.

The first website is actually over at info.cern.ch, along with a history showing that the name "World Wide Web" was coined for that site back in May, 1990.

symbolics.com is also not the first commerical web site, as GNN went online in August, 1993, and it is considered to be the first commercial website.

symbolics.com distinction is actually that it's the first .com domain to have been registered. It's kinda neat to know that the first .com domain still exists, but it's definitely not the first website.
