This happens surprisingly often. There was a single child survivor from an Indonesian "water landing" some time ago.
It seems that there are survival spaces in certain kinds of accident - such as uncontrolled shallow-angle flights into terrain - that children fit into but adults don't. Some children also "go floppy" in a crisis which can be a good thing, adults tend to tense up which can cause more severe injuries.
Life's going to be a lot more difficult for him when he recovers though, not to mention the relatives of everyone who didn't survive.
