I almost hope that this makes it into the archeological record. It's certainly something expressive of modern living.

        TV TRIVIA FUN TIME YAY:

Remember that one episode of WKRP In Cincinnati? The one where Johnny Fever tells everybody to leave their trash at the mayor's house?

Jerry Springer was Mayor of Cincinnati at the time.

          Indeed he was.

And the 'wrote a check to a hooker' story is most definitely NOT a myth.

Way back when he was mayor, he bounced a check to a hooker. I don't know what year it was, but it was at least 25 years ago. He also used to be a local news anchor, on the 11pm news. I went to the University of Cincinnati and he would come up to a local bar and sing with one of the bands, that ironically, is also still around, The Menus. He always thought he was hot shit when he showed up. Hit on ALL the girls too, it was gross, considering he was old enough to be our father and everyone knew the hooker story.

When he was just a local talk show host, my roommate at the time was on his show. She had some big time debt and he absolutely tore her to pieces for it. She was working with one of those debt places to make it right, it wasn't cool.
I made it on camera a couple of times in the audience shots. I'm the one 1/2 asleep in the back row. It was early morning and we had a late night!
Is it really SO hard to listen to the prompts?

I'll need to ask my mom for sure, but I think it was around 1977 or 78. I was a kid then, but my dad was entangled with him in city politics (long story) and that would have been about the time.

Really weird side note: I actually remember the drama about the 'mayor and the check'. I didn't know what it meant at the time (I was under 10 years old), but I do remember it. It wasn't until later years that I found out the whole story, as OhSoBitter related above.

Being a lifer of Cincy, even I had no idea to this day that he used to climb on stage with the Menu's!

OhSoBitter, do you still live here?

According to his wikipedia page, the hooker thing may have happened 1974-ish, since that incident lead to him resigning from the Cincinnati city council at that time.

I know that there's an episode of Springer where he actually stopped the show partway through. All I know is that it was the one where the guy who claimed he could make anyone a porn star, said he'd do it with children. (make them porn stars, not actually screw them) He stopped the show completely and walked off the set.

Because letting other people stick it in a child is so much better than sticking it in the child yourself.

Jerry Springer has standards? Who knew?

Peppergirl, I'm still here. On the East side, Pleasant Ridge.

That was Springer's routine every Wednesday night, he would come up to Ripley's and sing with them after the news. He wasn't any good either! Sad I can tell that, and I can't carry a tune in a bucket. But it was 11:30pm in a college bar, so everyone was drunk anyway.

You do realize most of that show is staged, right? I know people who watch regularly have spotted the same 'actors' in different roles.

More likely because if he didn't stop the show, he'd have been taken away in cuffs for endorsing child pornography.

I think they argued that some of the fights are staged to an extent so they don't cause damage to the set or to Jerry himself.

There's another episode that he stopped taping halfway through but there's no information on it.
