Brit Makes Record Sniper Kill in Afghanistan

3 shots, each traveling over 1.5 miles (8,120 ft)

rifle used: the British Army’s newest sniper rifle, the L115A3 chambered in .338 Lapua
effective range: suppose to be "a little over 3600 feet"

holy cow. he basically shot a little over 2.5 times further than the reported effective range

Impressive. Beat the former record by 45m, and even more impressive given that the gun used by the new holder has an effective range of roughly half of the one used by the previous holder.

It could be that the effective ranges were measured differently for the two guns. With sniper rifles like this, there's a world of difference between "range at which a bullet can cause lethal damage" and "range at which a first-shot kill can be expected". The latter is usually shorter because of the difficulty of aiming accurately in real-world conditions.

No, I think they are measured the same. The previous holder's gun was a Tac-50, which uses 50-cal ammo. The other functional use of that ammo apart from extreme range sniping is in anti-armor full auto guns.

          No,the .50 is used in the Barrett M82A1 in the anti-armor role & it's a semi-auto.There's different types of .50 BMG ammo,from basic FMJ,AP,APIT & the Raufoss.

The US military's main full-auto .50 is the M2 Browning machine gun, known as the Ma Deuce.

if I had the money I'd buy a Barrett
