while it may be considered "sinking to their level," i've always been of the opinion that when fred phelps dies (or any church member, really, but phelps in particular), the families and friends of all those whose funerals they've protested should gather together outside the cemetery and throw a party on the day of the funeral. a loud one. with a carnival. you know, to give them a taste of their own medicine. maybe make it a fundraiser, then donate the money in phelps' name to an aids research foundation.

i've also seen stories were crowds of funeral goers just happened to end up surrounding the wbc's cars. and that the wbc learned that ... harassing a big military funeral in town sometimes means the local auto shops will refuse to service their slashed tires.

Seems to me they can find a reason to protest anybody's funeral.

Ditto, morgana. Since my town is so close and full of "liberal heathens", they're here all the damn time. They always hit the KU graduations, some of the basketball games (high visibility), the local high schools, etc. We've been fortunate in that they have yet to picket one of the University theatre productions, although they've protested high school and community productions (RENT and the The Laramie Project spring to mind, although there have been others), and a few bigger events at the big performing arts center. Like the troupe of Chinese acrobats and dancers.

I hate that I live in the same state as these hateful bigots, and that this is a thing that Kansas is known for.
