  • How to get out of a ticket

    GPS equipped smartphone

Guy gets a speeding ticket for 15 MPH over the limit. checks his smart GPS app on phone. it shows him doing the speed limit. judge looks at data and dismissses the ticket.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

You can read the entire account over at SkatterTech, but for the tl;dr crowd, the cop didn't know the last time he went through radar training, when the gun was serviced or the unit's model number.
In all honesty... even without the GPS it's likely this ticket would have been thrown out of court.

    and google says this:
    http://www.radarguns.com/radar-guns-faq.html

    (Q)Are radar guns calibrated?
(A)Radars are calibrated in (and when they leave) the factory, after that the units are typically checked that they operate within design specifications (calibration check) once or twice per year.

I've never calibrated radar guns or radars at all, but I've calibrated electronic test equipment for 3 Navy commands and one civilian company. Nothing gets calibrated without paperwork being processed, creating proof. And most equipment has a due date for re-calibration.

And, at the civilian job, we even had some equipment where we were required to record & print every single test we took. Sometimes (for A2LA certified jobs) we even had to include the uncertainty factors of the equipment we used for testing).

So yeah, the data - if you have it serviced properly - will be available. However, not everyone sends their gear in like they should.
