  • They have lives outside work?! Shock! Horror!

As someone who works in the school, this article REALLY hits a nerve!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-Facebook.html

Parent sees photographs of teachers enjoying a night out. Parent prints off photos and posts them to other parents!

Are SC's that dense to think those who work with the public have no lives outside of work? What do they think, that we open up a trap door at our work locations, lay down in our pods & shut down for the night?

Both groups need clue-by-fours - who doesn't set their Facebook profile to private? Even as someone who teaches college (and therefore, under less scrutiny), I still keep my profile private, don't friend current students, and carefully monitor what pictures of me are posted and tagged. Teachers have a right to a private life, of course, but you have to be aware of how you present yourself in public, especially in social networking.

Sometimes they really are that dense, yes - I was waiting at a bus stop with a guy who apparently is one of our library customers, because he recognized me and said "Hey, aren't you supposed to be at work right now?". The sad part is that he seemed to be completely serious about it.......not to mention that he apparently forget it was the one day of the week we are closed. (this sort of thing is why I dislike encountering library customers outside of work, because they always seem shocked/surprised that they are seeing me somewhere other than at work)

I live in a small town with a population of 4000, many of them families. I have never created a full post on this, but I often get stopped on the street by parents who recognise me, however, it is never a sociable "Hi, how are you?"

            It is always:

            "What are you doing??"
            "Where have you been??"

or when I have been shopping:

"What have you bought!?" - while trying to peek into the bag.

I also completely agree that their profiles should have been private. My profile is private, yet I always get friends requests from students (always a no no). However, the photographs are NOT bad in the slightest. They are just having fun! It's not like they were trying to pole dance in front of the children!

Pretty much, yes. That's why they treat us like they'd never treat anyone else; they don't consider us real people, they think we're some sort of Retail Borg.

That's begging for a parody....the collective retail borg....at the end of the day they all go to their pods and deactivate together, reactivate together the next day...now if they could just assimilate the customers

I kept scrolling down, looking for the scandalous stuff. Then I realized I was looking at it.

I guess some people don't get out much, if they thought this was scandalous. And even if it was, so what? They aren't doing anything illegal.

                        Oh most definately.
I have had customers tell, not ask, tell me that I am supposed to go their home after work to fix whatever computer problem that they were too lazy to bring to the shop to be checked.

When told that I have other plans/commitments, I have had customers ask in a very rude tone what exactly they were, and that their problem was more important than whatever stupid plans I may have. Oh, and they want it all done for free, or to just give a token amount for gas.

I have had a couple customers call me up at home (they're friends of the parents, who see nothing wrong with this. Even though said parents continously give me crap for working so many hours) and say that 'you're just a computer tech, it's not like you have a life or are doing anything important.'

At which point, my reply becomes this: "And as a computer tech, I know how to do something you do not. I can block phone numbers from even ringing on my phone. In fact, I'm programming yours in now. Once we hang up, you can call all you want. My phone will immediately drop you into voicemail. Oh, and I have a handy voicemail application on my phone, too. It lets me just tap and delete messages, complete with caller id for who left the message. I'll go through it once a day, and delete messages from you. In future, I suggest you be nice to the computer techs. Otherwise, like me, they'll tell you to fuck off and never call again. Goodbye." And then hang up.
