  • McDonalds to replace cashiers with touch screens in the UK

~McDonald's restaurants in Europe will soon be swapping the chain's legendary "service with a smile" with "service with a beep." ~

According to this story cashiers will be phased out in an effort to save 3-4 seconds per customer....that's what a cashiers job is worth apprently 3-4 seconds. Way to raise staff moral eh!

    Pathetic.

But how much time will be wasted by people who can't figure out how to work them out? Enough idiots hold up the queue at supermarkets thinking they know how to use a self serve check out.
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

Laughs, "Don't they ever give up? This has been tried with fast food restaurants and delis (including grocery store delis) off and on for something like a decade, and it fails every single time. Either customers won't use it, or they can't use it (sometimes its not the customer, but the design) or they found out that when it breaks, it costs more to fix than they saved by cutting back or eliminating cashiers.

Excellent point, anyone who has ever been stuck being a moron at a self checkout would agree Im sure. I was once stuck for twenty minutes because the guy kept scanning his items in the most arse backwards way possible and blaming the machine....

they're probably trying to eliminate customer complaints about cashiers.

Yeah, I remember when they tried it at an Arby's in my old town. I had no problems with it, but I'm one of the few who didn't! Don't think it lasted very long.

Anyone ever notice that the SCs who scream the loudest about "stupid cashiers, a trained monkey could do your job!" are the same ones who can't figure out a self-scan or touch screen?
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Yep and those are the worst ones to be stuck behind in line.

I was at Home Depot a couple of days ago. The only had SCO open. Lottsa fun for the folks with lumber! I was buying a couple of bolts.... the ones where you have to write the number down. Guess what: can't punch the number in yourself, have to wait for the attendant. Who was busy with all of the people with lumber.......

                Idiots.

They tested these in a McD near me. It was wonderful, once you got to the front of the line. I could pick out items, customize them, and make sure my order was right much faster than trying to confirm everything with a cashier.

The problem was the line of stupid people in front of me who couldn't figure out how to work the thing. They always seemed to think that talking to it would somehow make it understand...

The Sheetz gas stations if they have the MTO (Made To Order) section in them, has this. You use a touch screen to figure out what kind of sandwich/sub/whatever you want to order from them. I haven't used it in a while, but it's pretty easy. Though I have seen other just stare at the thing trying to figure out what they want on their sandwiches. Must be "too many choices".

There will be people who will refuse to use the screens and will try to get an employee to do it for them, as doing it themselves would mean that they won't be getting "customer service".

I use the SCO's at grocery stores for little purchases but I don't like to do it for larger purchases. I worked in a grocery store for a while and since grocery stores don't pay me to ring up and bag groceries, why should I do their work for them?
