My uncle's dog would do this with smaller rocks. In fact, his name was actually "Rocky" for this very reason. What is UP with that??? Nobody trained Rocky to do this, he just enjoyed doing it.

Is this some dog sport or recreation they do?

Hunting / prey drive at its best. The dog "catches" the rock - brings it out of the water, and then it "runs" back into the water.
