"Hi, Jack" .... WOOPS!

I was looking up the infamous "I was just saying hello!" line from Doctor Who - gotta love Jack Harkness - and found this from 2009

With a title like that I just HAD to read it.


O boy. talk about "woopsie!"

“There was a guy on the plane named Jack, and someone walked in and said, `Hi, Jack,”' [the police Lt. said.] “The mike just happened to be open and the tower heard it.”

So yep. the tower thought he said "Hijack!" and called an emergency.

Everyone responded properly, checked the pilot's ID to make sure nothing was wrong. And after it was over they all had a laugh.

and as one man said... "At least we know the system works!"

And people use it as a hypothetical example of something innocent getting you into trouble. Never thought there was an actual example.

I also thought that was an 'urban legend' of sorts as well...

I remember it as a joke in an issue of Archie Comics 30 years ago.

People who work for a certain manufacturer of industrial lift platforms need to be careful around planes/airports to be sure they don't mention the name of their employer (Skyjack).

A similar (trouble because of calling to a friend) incident was in a Bazooka Joe comic - at a circus, someone called out to his friend Rube ("Hey Rube!" is a trouble call at the circus).
