Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Been there on all of them. Not much on #2. With #1, my mindless job wasn't washing dishes, but was mindless none the less.

He went off the rails with the kids thing. Parenting your own kid is not the same as working with children.

Actually I think just working with the public in any form, face to face or on the phone, gives you a different perspective than working in a job where you only deal with co-workers.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

Oh yes, I saw that one. OTOH, this board would have a lot less material.

True. But there would still be GK's SC's. Those are the only constant in this world.

I think retail work in general should be there. Yes he touched on it with waiting tables and being management, but still. It is my feeling that everyone should have to work behind a cash register, or in some aspect of retail, at some point in their lives, just to learn what it's really like. Of course, as one of my favorite TV characters ever once said, some assholes never learn. Still, though...everyone should have to try it!

I've had all but waiting tables, though the tech thing was not 'official' (Ie never got paid for it).

I've never waited tables or done tech support although I have worked food service. I used to be a substitute teacher. That made me decide real quick that teaching was not my calling. I do a lot of dish washing at my current job. Even though it's mindless, I find it strangely relaxing. It's also nice to not have to deal with the customers as much.

Yeah, I was surprised 'retail store' wasn't in there. I've worked food service in college but not waiting tables; I spent 8 years working in the bookstores and had a couple other retail jobs in high school. Worked at a day camp, babysitting.... And I worked as an editorial asssistant for an academic journal publisher dealing with authors and editors from all over the place.

Another one: Movie or television extra
You will see a lot less senseless deaths and injuries if more people can see what goes into the making of those images. Case-in-point: When I was a reporter in The Fugitive, I saw Michigan Avenue (4 lanes of traffic each direction) blocked off all night for what would end up as less than 30 seconds of screen time. Joe Pantoliano (Cosmo Renfro) took a blow to the face and was able to speak intelligably shortly afterwards...in my construction days a real human who took the same blow died shortly afterwards.

                            1) Waiting tables: fuck no. Why? Because I know I wouldn't last a week at it. Plus my nose is always runny/itchy so that would be a turn off for customers.

                            2) Kids: depends. I do like them sometimes, but when it comes to putting my foot down I have no experience really

                            3) Tech support: ... fuck. yep. been there done that. Two navy ships and now a computer job part time. Actually I'm trying to get into a full time job (tho not where I work cos ... I don't really like retail)

                            4) Power: I've kinda been a supervisor. I'm not great at giving orders though. Although I'm good at pitching in with the junior peeps.

                            5) Mindless: does the military count? Just kidding. Actually though a lot of the stuff we did really qualified. Refuel at sea? Sure! but we haul the hoses across by hand. Taking on stores? Sure, but they're passed back inside the ship by hand. .... We called them "working parties"

                              2) Kids: yep, working in a toy store right now, directly interact with kids all the time.

                              3) Tech support: spent four years at it.

                              4) Pow... er? What means this word?

                              5) Mindless: ohhh yes. And I love it, to a certain extent.
