  • Another SC runs to the papers

One of the most pointless news stories I've ever read.

Lady goes to bridal store. They don't stock her size, and it is out of her price range.

Of course, it is all the stores fault! How dare they?!

Plus she is clearly lying about her size.

    Um.

I am on a pretty tight budget, so you know what I do?

Not go into stores I know I can't afford.

I don't know about her size but the shop's position makes perfect sense.

      No way she's a size 16. Maybe a 20.

For the record, I'm far larger than her, so I'm not being snarky.

Unless UK sizes are that much different. CRML is right about pointless--it must have been a slow news day.

Taking this story at face value:

Bridezilla has a budget in mind

The store's wares start at the upper end of her budget.

The ones she would like are more likely to be several times her budget, with the necessary alterations. Moreover, how often do you wear a wedding gown? Consider renting or just wear your best outfit like medieval brides did.

She looks a size or two bigger than I am and I'm about a 22-24, American. And they didn't say she was too big, they said they didn't have her size. Big difference!

US sizes are about 2 sizes down from their Australian equivalent, so I'm not sure if it's the same between US/UK.

Looks like the UK dress sizes run 4 higher higher than US: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothing_sizes

I'm a 18/20 dress here, so I'd be a 22/24 UK, and I'm probably about the same build as her, though she is much shorter than me so it's hard to tell. Not to mention that wedding dresses always run small.

Regardless, the store didn't carry what she wanted. So just go do another store! Lots of the little stores at our mall don't carry much in the way of plus-size clothing, so I simply don't shop there. Problem solved!

... Heh. Looks like someone at the Daily Mail didn't like that most of the top rated comments defended the store and generally expressed some degree of disbelief at her claim of a dress size 16- Comments have been disabled.

I LOVE The Daily Fail. I actually visit their website daily to see what idiotic, bigoted and pointless articles they publish. It always makes me feel good about myself, knowing that I will never be like them.

                      She's not a 16 by U.S. sizes. I don't know about U.K. or Australian sizes.

But really, is it worth going to the papers about it?? Is this the first time she couldn't find something in her size and budget? If so, I'd like to know where she normally shops.

The problem is not her body, it's her inflated sense of self-importance.

my bra size is not exactly common either.

Do I beat up the store for having less of a selection in my size? No. I pick what I can or find another store.

i mean let's face it - stores cater to averages because it's most apt to get them sales.

On the flip size, it's interesting when the local average is different than other regions. When I lived in Hawaii I saw size ZERO jeans. Yeah. There were enough girls there that fit into those things that the stores had quite a selection. And I'm not talking about those brands that re-numbered sizes but regular American sizing standards.

And that's not even starting on the "price range" issue. If she can't afford what she wants... tough fucking luck. No one owes her a dress. Fucking rent one then. Or go somewhere you can afford.

Screaming at a store that's out of your price range and doesn't sell your size anyway is... dumb.

It's a shame the paper even saw fit to bother with this, and I speak as someone who used to work for a paper that never, ever turned down a story, no matter how moronic or baseless it was.

Love how the majority of the comments basically told her to get over herself.

                            £450? For a wedding dress?

And yes, she's never a 16; my wife is the same height and was a 16 before a recent diet & she was nowhere near that ... "rubenesque". For this woman to be a 16, she'd need to be 4'2, not 5'2!

I'm a UK size 14-16, and I'm sorry but no way is she the same size as me.. I'd put her at about a size 20. Not trying to be snarky, just saying that's what my guess would be.

I had a friend who was size 20 when she got married, and when she went to her local bridal shop they didn't have all their dresses available to try in all sizes either. Did she kick off about it? No. When she found 'the' dress, she stepped into the biggest size they had - a 14 - and put her arms through the sleeveholes. The dress couldn't be done up, but it was enough for her to see what it would look like and they were happy to take her measurements and have one made in her size.
