omg on a flight. yeah many luggage compartments are not pressurized. they're very lucky he's not dead.

and i'm not really surprised the luggage checkers didn't find them. that stuff's calibrated for chemicals not cats.

But he went thru x-ray it said - no one caught the cat skeleton?
Poor thing - that is why I alway count the cats right beore leaving the house for any length of time.

depends on what he was next to. some objects can mask others. plus he's small and was probably curled up.

these people are more keyed to looking for shapes of weapons or dangerous items. or checking out the luggage of someone silly enough to empty out a range bag to use it for luggage. (yes someone i know did that, it triggered the chemical tests and annoyed the checkers when they found out it was nothing but clothes...)


edit: and i was corrected on the scanners. i got to use some at my last command but no one ever really trained us on what it was scanning for. apparently the xray machines actually scan for the chemicals.

when i first started seeing people doing chemical screening it was with the wipes inside the luggage. i guess it's a time-saver to just run it through the xray machine.

On another forum (no longer in operation), I recall a post by someone in the military (demolitions specialist) about a time when, on leave, he used a conveniently-sized range bag as a carry-on. It tripped the chemical detector, but a hand search revealed nothing out of the ordinary. The security person asked him what he had carried in the bag the last time he used it, and his response was "Couple of Claymores, 5 pounds of C4, some other stuff I don't remember, since the post was quite a while ago". The security person suggested that in future, he not use "at work" bags when on vacation.
