First saw this on the Spanish channel that's always on the tv in my old department's breakroom. I can only read/understand enough Spanish to be able to get the basics of the story, and then I was in a coworker's office after I got back to my area and he pulled up CNN and we saw a news report in English. I read a couple articles later in the day but they didn't have a lot of new info. When I got home the news stayed on until 8:00 so I was watching then. I cannot imagine what goes through people's minds to do something like this.

My friend just had to uproot her 5 kids from Long Island to Connecticut because of the hurricane (they were in the process of buying a house that got flooded, and their house was sold so they still had to move out, so they moved in with her parents for now until they find another place), and they are about 10 miles away from this town now. According to a post by her husband their school is only 2 miles from this school.

At the risk of sounding maudlin, I'm going to say what is on my mind.

The one and only thing that can triumph over evil in this world is goodness. Goodness takes many forms: kindness, courtesy, justice, and more -- and what it all means is that after we've all held the victims, their families, the town of Newtown, and the state of Connecticut in our thoughts and prayers, please don't let that be the only thing you do. Go out and be good to someone. Be kind, be polite and courteous, fight for justice... whatever you choose to do, remember that it is rarely a broken brain that causes incidents like these. Far more often it's just another case of someone who was hurt hurting others.

Whoever hurt them often doesn't matter (and often it does and you must use your discretion as to whether or not it's important) -- the important thing is to be good to someone. Be better to them than someone else was. Your kindness matters, and even the ancients knew it: "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" -- Proverbs 15:1

Please, when you finish mourning, when you finish praying or dwelling on the events in Newtown, go out and be good. Goodness in all its forms is the only way we can stop terrible things like this from occurring.

I have to say that this is an important issue with me because I'll never forget the mother of a guy I knew in high school coming up to me and thanking me for treating her son like a normal human being. He was a loner, withdrawn, but he sat next to me in computer programming and so we just naturally ended up talking to one another. We had actual conversations. Years later his mother saw me at the mall, approached, and told me how much that had meant to him and how the fact that a single person had kind words to say had helped to turn him away from doing something everyone would have regretted. I don't know what she meant by that, and she wouldn't say, but it has stuck with me all these years.

So, please... Do something. Go be good.

This is my state. My beloved CT. I never truly understood the "I can't believe it happened here," until now.

My mother, uncle, aunt, and a cousin are all teachers, in small towns. (Not Newtown, but uncle is close)

My office was eerily quiet yesterday, and Fridays are usually jovial.

        I second the "Do Good."

So it seems the Westborough Baptist Church wants to picket the funerals

But in slightly better news, Anonymous went after their website and just published all of their personal contact information.

There's a facebook page about the WBC folks and trying to arrange some sort of human blockade when/if they do show up. I don't think anyone should counterprotest the church with signs or anything, I think they should just form a wall of people around them, preferably with their backs to them, blocking them from the sight of any mourners, and just completely ignore them. Someone suggested singing to drown out anything the might yell.

Yes, the Westboro loonies have promised to be there.

However, a recent internet article has said there will be a counter-protest.

              By the KKK.

Have I fallen ass-over-teakettle down a rabbit hole or something???

I never, ever, thought the day would come, in a million gazillion years, when I would actually be tempted to say, "Good going, KKK".

Agreed. Reminds me of that anti-bullying thing they did last month. They're doing the right thing this time around, too.

Either that or it'll be on PPV . . .

And I just hope the news ignores any protesting they do and anyone who protests them.

(It'll be a Christmas miracle if they do, of course.)

Instead of making a new thread for this, I'll just offer this news item here:

                            Christmas Day gift

The neighboring police departments sent officers over to Newtown ... so that the local authorities could have time off on Christmas Day.

It is indeed. Kudos to the officers who are giving up their time so the Newtown police can have a rare holiday off.
