1950, Korean War.
Fr. Kapaun started off on Aug 2, 1950 by repeatedly going into an active battle zone, to pull wounded to safety. He continued to tend to them as the battle raged on. And when he had a chance to leave to go to safety, he elected to stay - despite knowing that the wounded were going to be captured & sent to a POW camp.
Inside the POW camp he continued his work. He helped prisoners stave off dysentery, picked lice off of the sick/dying, even washed their underwear. On top of that he still conducted religious services regardless of the prohibition against it, and helped prisoners resist brainwashing, until he eventually died of starvation and illness.
I am not entirely sure but ... this may be the first time a candidate for sainthood has been awarded the MOH.
